Await arena
Any mention of the ministry of
labor in connection with an arena
naturally frightens people.
That's why Hensall residents
are anxiously awaiting an engin-
eering report on their arena.
Although they spent almost
$30,000 in the past two years
reinforcing the structure, there is
little hope of the arena being
given a completely clean bill of
health by the ministry, which

has closed down over 60 arenas
in Ontario since new building
standards were passed earlier
this year, Even arenas that have
just been built in the past two
years, such as the one in Howick
Township are found to be below
standard.
Hensall was notified that an
engineering study was required
a few weeks ago and the firm of
B. M. Ross & Associates, God-
erich were hired to undertake
the study.
Ken Dunn, an engineer with
the Goderich firm, told the News
this week that they have complet-
ed their field studies on the arena
and are now doing an analysis of
the findings at their office.
He indicated a report, includ-
ing an estimate for any changes
that have to be made in the
facility. should be available to
Mensal] council within two weeks.
11 that report is then submitted
to the ministry, the fate of the
arena will be decided very
shortly.
Dunn said there was little
doubt !but what sonic repairs
would be required, although he
added he had no idea at the
present how extensive they may
be.
He explained that the new
regulations pertaining to arenas
were not just for snow and wind
loads on roofs. He said there
were new standards for floor
loads as well and this required
examination of the seating area
at Hensall as well as the area
under the upstairs auditorium.
While Hensall residents are
anxiously awaiting the outcome
of the study, so are some interest-
ed groups in Exeter. Both the
Exeter Minor Hockey Association
and the Figure Skating Club have
plans to take some of their
activities to Hensall next season
in view of the closing of the
Exeter arena.
