The Huron County Historical
Society is sponsoring historical
contests at fairs in the county this
year. The society is sponsoring
these contests with the hope that
our young people will be encour-
aged to do research in their
county's history and in the pro-
cess be encouraged to continue
their interest in the historical
heritage of our county. Judges
and prizes for the contests will
be provided by the society.
The following historical themes
will be sponsored in 1976:
Category 1: A photographic study
on any historical item in the coun-
Participation by the school
students in these projects would
be appreciated. - It is believed
that the school children of the
county should have some appreci
ation .and interest in their coun-
ty's past, and it is hoped that the
efforts of the Huron County
Historical Society will help pro-
mote a greater interest in local
history.
Several of the villagers attend-
ed the annual meeting of the
Huron County Historical Society
in the Village Hall at Varna
last Wednesday night and enjoy-
ed the history of the village given
by Bill McAsh and Mrs. Ida
McClinchey. Music was pro-
vided by Watson Webster on
the mouth organ, Wilfred Jervis '
on the bones and Albert Craig,
guitar and soloist.

to have the time anymore."
Below the guest house are the
stables with a small house to
one side for the grooms. Most of
the brood mares, foals and
yearlings are out in the pasture
field beside the stables.
"I do a lot of breeding here
but I also buy and sell a few."
He laughs, "You have to be
careful with brood mares you
know." If you pay too much
attention to one, the others will
get jealous and they can be
quite vicious." He grins sideways
and adds, "They're a lot like
women."
Inside the stables it iS quiet
as most of the horses are either
outside or stabled at a race
track. Mr. Mcllroy owns about
22 standard breds including
brood mares, yearlings, two and
three year olds and aged horses.
Only seven of eight might be
racing at any one time and these
are • kept stabled at the race
tracks.
Merrywood Rick is a seven
year old Mr. McIlroy is presently
using for stud, although he in-
tends to race him again. Rick
was not bred at Merrywood
farms, Mr. Mcllroy bought
him, but he is the best racer
the farm has at the moment.
So far, Merrywood Rick has only
sired one foal but he's a good-
looking one according to Mr.
McIlroy.
"But I figure a dam is about
75% responsible for a good race
horse," says Mr. McIlroy. "We
have one mare here who is 25
years old, and always has a good
foal. Her offspring have earned
more than $400,000."
Behind the stables are pasture
fields and two tracks. One is a
small sand track while the other
is a 1/2 mile track with a stone
dust surface on top of clay or
light loam. Standard bred
racing is harness racing which is
a tough rife for a horse. Mr.
PURE
McIlroy races his horses at
Roosevelt Raceway in New York
City, Buffalo and Batavia race-
ways in New York state and on
the Ontario Jockey Club Circuit
which includes Greenwood, Mo-
hawk, Garden City and Windsor
to name a few.
"I never go down to the
stable or paddock area before a
race," says Mr. McIlroy, "and
I never bet on my own horses."
Most of the hay, straw and
grain used on the farm is pur-
chased locally.
"1 am very fussy about the
quality of the feed I buy and
I can buy better quality than
our land will grow." he explains.
Back in the stables you notice
a small room you overlooked
before. Inside the walls are
covered with harnesses. If you
look closely you see that there
is a name beside almost every
set and each bit and type of
blinder looks a little different
than the one beside it.
"The type of bit and blinder
used depends on the personality
and age of the horse," explains
Mr. Mcllroy. "Also, most har-
ness is getting away from leather
and into plastic. It's easier to
clean, lighter and keeps its
shape."
Tucked in between the tool
shop and the grooms cottage
is another storage shed. "This
is our junk shed," laughs Mr.
McIlroy as he points to various
pieces of equipment scattered
about the room. Along one wall
however are some racing sulkies.
Different sizes and shapes match
different prices as they can range
from $400 to $1,500.
Mr. McIlroy enjoys breeding
his mares and doesn't like to
sell them until after they have
run a few races. He admits it
is a risky business as one error
in judgement could cost thou-
sands of dollars. He remembers
Merrywood Susie, a yearling
which he sold because he had too
many horses several years ago.
After racing her as a three-
,
year old several times, her new
owners turned down a $50,000
offer for her. That horse went
on to win $104,000 in one season.
"So, you can be lucky, even in
this business,'" laughs Mr.
Mcllroy.
