Properties to be
seized for taxes
Grand Bend council is in the
process of registration of seven
properties owned by two people
for non-payment of back taxes.
Registration occurs when the
village takes ownership of a
property defaulting in at least
three years of unpaid taxes.
This is instead of a tax sale
and according to Reeve Bob
Sharen, it is a tougher measure.
"Grand Bend has always had
a problem collecting taxes,
says Reeve Share. "Perhaps
this will show people that we
do mean business and we are
going to get tougher."
The ownership of the proper-
ties will likely be turned over to
the council within a week. Once
this takes place, the previous
owners have one year in which
to redeem their property: To do
this they must pay the back taxes,
interest to that date, adminis-
tration costs of the village for
the transaction, the village's
lawyer's fees, and any repairs
the village has done to maintain
the properties.
After one year, the village is
free to sell the property.
According to Reeve Sharen,
"It's the toughest measure we
can take, but we still have to wait
the full three years. I would like
to see it lowered to two years in
arrears.''
However, Reeve Sharen admits
that the taxpayers of Grand Bend
are improving. More are paying
their taxes promptly all the time.
