BLUE 'WATER REST HOME
This week end has been quite
a contrast to the last one. We
hardly expected to be caught in a
snow storm, but what choice have
we?
On Tuesday evening, the April
birthday party was sponsored by
the Ladies of St. Peter's Roman
Catholic Church, St. Joseph.
A musical programme was pro-
vided by Mr. Clare Masse
and Mr. Don Beauchamp singing
and providing their own guitar
accompaniment. Miss Diane
Creces and Jenine Rau also sang
several numbers.
Residents having birthdays
during the month of April and
receiving gifts from 'the Ladies
Auxiliary were Mrs. Vera Bro-
phey, Mrs. Catherine Hicks,
Mrs. Mary Passmore, Mr. Floyd
Pridham, Mr. Wellington Riehl,
Mrs. Alda Simmons, Mr. Thos.
Westlake and Mrs. Myrtle Wood-
ford. Following the programme
refreshments were served.
Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Baker
celebrated their 70th wedding .
anniversary this past week.
We wish to convey our congratu-
lations on achieving this mile-
stone. Mrs. Baker is a Resident
of our Home.

On Friday evening bingo was
enjoyed followed by refresh-
ments.
The chapel service was with-
drawn on Sunday evening be-
cause of the Residents' family
dinner. As usual a large number
of guests were present to spend
the afternoon with family mem-
bers here and to enjoy dinner
with them.
We are indebted to Mrs.
Audrey Haberer and Mrs. Marg-
aret Coates who provided organ
music during the afternoon and
all during the dinner hour.
This was very much enjoyed
and appreciated by all present.
We also wish to thank Mrs. Horn,
Head Cook, for making the dinner
such a success, also Mrs. Gladys
Gingerich for organizing mem-
bers of the Ladies Auxiliary to
assist in both kitchen and dining -
room as well as our regular
kitchen staff who worked so hard.
Tickets were sold on a cake,
proceeds to go to Bunny Bundle.
Mrs. Pat Cronkite was the lucky
winner of the cake. We especially
wish to thank Mrs. Delmer Miller
for making and decorating the
cake and donating it for the
occasion.
Daughter of former
minister visits Varna
By MRS. BILL CHESSELL
bergen, Raymond and Paul, of
Stratford, visited with Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Chessell and Brian
on Sunday.
The Varna UCW sponsored*
a very successful dessert euchre
party on April 21. There was a
good attendance, with seventeen
tables of euchre, and prizes
went to the following: high,
Mrs. Wm. Caldwell; low, Mrs.
Reta Upshall; lone hands, Mrs.
Harold Dowson. The prizes
were donated by Mrs. Tom
Consitt, Mrs. Bev Hill, and Mrs.
David Roy.
A large offering of home baking
and two Raggedy Ann dolls were
quickly sold. Members of the
committee were Mrs. Bev Hill,
Mrs. Doug McAsh, Mrs. Tom
Consitt, Mrs. David Roy and
Mrs. Wayne Beierling.
A little household tip ---if your
electric dryer seems to be oper-
ating properly, but the clothes
aren't drying., check the outside
vent. One woman in Varna
found birds nesting in hers,
another found that a large drum
had pushed the hood of the
vent in, closing it completely.
Visitors of interest in Varna
United Church on Easter Sunday
were Misses May and Eleanor
Davidson of Hamilton, whose
father was minister of Varna
Presbyterian Church (the present
United Church building) from
1901 to 1910. Rev. Davidson
also built the original cottages
at Deer Park Lodge on Lake
Huron. Accompanying them was
Miss Adelene Palmer of Goderich
who with her late sister Roxie
used to sing frequently on
special occasions here. Roxie
was also a talented pianist.
The offering plate we use
were donated by Roxie ana
Adelene in memory of their
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Palmer and their brother Willie,
who gave his life for his country
in 1915 during the First World
War.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Austin
of Elora visited on Sunday with
Mr. and Mrs. Mervyn Hayter.
The Austins were in the group
which holidayed in Hawaii with
the Hayters a couple of years ago.

paying off.
Exeter mayor Bruce Shaw who
is also principal at Scaforth
District High School said he
was trying to maintain a certain
amount of objectivity but com-
mended the board on keeping the
increase at the 28.7 level.
Bayfield reeve Ed Oddleifson
said the board appeared to be
acting very irresponsible in the
instructional category with a
large increase despite anti-
inflation rulings.
He was again told salary
negotiations had been completed
early in 1975 for the current
school year.
Gerry Ginn of Goderich town-
ship suggested, "it's the student
that will suffer not the staff."
Director Cochrane again empha-
sized, "our basic education
program will not suffer."
Goderich mayor Deb Shewfclt
on the method of levyingg-school
taxes said, "our methods arc
completely antiquadated. The
total education levy should come
from Toronto and get at the
people who get the services."
Board vice-chairman Charles
Thomas was in complete agree-
ment saying, "I'm opposed to
the government making taxes
more aggressive. Taxes on
property should be alleviated in
all areas. I have always fought
for services for people and taxes
should be supplied by people
and not from property."
Ginn replied, "If we want to
keep any say in education at
the local level we have to be
prepared to pay for it."
Goderich councillor Elsa
Haydon asked about an expend-
iture of $458,500 for tuition fees
and was told this was the amount
paid by Huron to other school
boards for tuition fees for stu-
dents not able to find their
required subjects locally.
John Cochrane said among
these students were a half
dozen taking graphic arts and
other courses at Beal Technical
School in London.
Huron warden Jack McCutch-
eon said he still supported the
local collection of taxes in order
to keep local autonomy. He
added, "the education ' levy
makes our county rate look;
pretty good. What alarms me is
the cut in services and the debt
charges are beginning to like
the provinces."
In conclusion, budget chairman
John Elliott commented, "I
feel the board is in a position
to exercise control as the confi-
dence of the people will allow."
