Maple Leaf Mills
closes Exeter plant
One of Exeter's oldest bus-
inesses closed this week. How-
ever, the closing may only be
temporary.
Maple Leaf Mills closed their
seed division plant on John St.
on Thursday and will now be
servicing area customers from
their plant in Baden.
Don Field, who has been
manager in Exeter, is moving
to Peterboro. He told the News
that the local plant was closed
as part of a cost-cutting program
by the firm. Immediate plans
are for closing the plant only
for this season.
The business was started by
the late James G. Jones in Win-
chelsea and then moved to
Exeter. In later years it was
operated by J. Hubert Jones
and then he was joined in the
business by the Hon. Charles

MacNaughton and the firm
operated as Jones, MacNaughton
Seeds.
For several years, the business
was on Main St. at the present
location of Smyths Shoe Store.
About 30 years ago, the John
St. building was erected and the
firm also had an outlet in Credi=
ton. It was closed some years
ago.
Maple Leaf Mills purchased
the firm about 18 years ago.
An' employee with the firm
over the past 27 years was Basil
Preszcator, Huron St, He's
been semi -retired for the past
two years but has been called
back to assist on several occasions
in those two years.
"I guess I'll be permanently
retired now," he told the News
this week.
The long -tine employee said
he had been a part of many
changes in his 27 years with the
local seed plant. The firm im-
ported and exported seeds and
grasses.
Ladies pick
delegate
Twenty-four members and
Rev. Blackwell were present for
the April meeting of the Lutheran
Church Women.
The committee for the April
meeting were Mrs. Clare Deich-
ert, Mrs. Alice Thiel, Mrs. Ferd
Haberer. Mrs. Herb Keller pres-
ented the topic on the North
American Indians. Mrs. Harvey
Hohner and Mrs. Carl Willert
assisted in presenting a skit.
Delegate for the biennial.conv-
ention of the Eastern Canada
Synodical Unit of • Lutheran
Church Women, May 14-16 is
Mrs. Jack Turkheirn. Alternate,
Mrs. Harvey Hohner. The conv-
ention will be held at the Sir
Wilfrid Laurier University, in
Waterloo.
