Nee honesty Restorers of historic homes must resist the tendency to decor- ate them with "pretty" furnish- ings and instead strive for hon- esty and authenticity, Huron County historians were told Thursday night. Dorothy Duncan, museum adviser with the Ontario ministry of culture and recreation, told about 80 county historians that unmade beds and simple furnishings will create an air of honesty in restored homes. "You've got to create a look in rooms as if someone just walked away to do something elsewhere," she said. The historian, who has advised on restorations of the Van Eg- mond house in Seaforth and the Huron County jail at Goderich, said most furnishings in early 19th century Canadian homes were simple and austere. "It's dishonest to make things furnishings we plan to put in that house," she said. Clues to accurate room restor- ations are personal diaries, early photographs and paintings. Early Eaton's catalogues can show what goods were available to the public at specific periods in history. "There's too much of a tend- ency to furnish as we feel the gentry lived," she said, "when most furnishings were actually much more simple." Mrs. Duncan addressed the gathering as the last of a series of speakers invited by the quickly expanding Huron County branch uc tion eek t ZP.S. Education Week in Ontario schools is April 4-10, 1976.
