HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1976-03-31, Page 15Split in OMHA final Little Brittain and Zurich Pee Wees are currently battling for the "E" Championship of the Ontario Minor Hockey Associ- ation and are tied at one game apiece after weekend play. These are the only two teams left out of 48 that were compet- ing. This is the first time ever for a Pee Wee team from Zurich to be in the O.M.H.A. Finals, The two teams will tangle for the third and fourth games in Zurich on April 3 at 8:30 p.m. and April 4, at 12:00 noon, with the fifth game, if necessary, also to be in Zurich on April 10. The score on Saturday, March 27, was Little Brittain 8, Zurich 6; and on Sunday, March 28, Zurich 6, Little Brittain 4. Prior to this series Zurich stamped out Delaware three games straight. Zurich 3 Delaware 2 In an exciting game, Zurich managed to squeeze by Delaware despite real pressure in the last game. Bob Hay played a real hot game in net. Kris Bedard scored unassisted in the first period and again in the second and came right back to assist on David Smith's goal to put Zurich in a 3-0 lead. However, Delaware slipped one by with about three minutes left in the second period. Then with less than three minutes to play in the game Delaware got their second counter, but Zurich came up with a well- dese'ved win. Little Britain 8 Zurich 6 In a clean, well -played game with lots of goals, Zurich carne up on the short end Saturday night in Little Brittain Zurich came up with the first goal by an all out effort from David Erb with Jini Willert assisting. However, twelve seconds later Ken Drink- walter blasted one by Bob Hay in goal. Little Brittain went ahead on another goal by Drinkwalter, but with less thaii two minutes in the first period Robert Willert slipped one by to' ie the game. Zurich cane h rck quick in the second frame when Robert Willert notched another, but Little Brittain got ahead before the end of the period with goals by Meek and Drinkwalter again. Little Brittain came out strong in the third period gaining two more goals. Zurich 6 Little Brittain 4 Zurich held the lead all the way in this exciting game on Sunday. Bob Hay held the goals to a minimum despite a bruised arum and an injured knee early in the third period. Kris Bedard played a good checking game, aided by the rest of the team, to spoil most of Drinkwalter's rushes. There was no scoring until late in the first period when Robert Willert cashed in on a play from Brian Horner. Early in the second frame again, Robert Willert blasted one by the pipes, aided by Kris Bedard and Pat Cyr. Meek scored for Little Brittain, but before the buzzer went, Zurich notched three more goals, first David Erb connected from Jing Willert, then Robert Willert, then David Smith slipped another in from Brian Horner and Robert Willert. Little Brittain outscored Zurich with three goals in the last period to Zurich's single by Jim Willert, aided by David Erb and Kris Bedard, but the locals carne up with the big victory. Skaters raise About 50 skaters participated in a Skateathon at the Hensail Arena on Saturday to raise funds for the Hensall Minor Athletic Association. And their efforts were well worthwhile, according to Bill Taylor, who was in charge of the project. Close to $800 was raised in pledges. Bob Lavery, an active member of the Minor Athletic Associat- ion in Hcnsall, was the oldest skater on the ice and also won the honour for raising the most amount of money in pledges. He collected $105 from all the sponsors who doubted his abil- ity. The skater making the most laps in the project was Steve Beer. All the skaters who start- ed the event lasted right through until finishing time, at one o'clock in the afternoon (even Bob Lavery). They had started at eight o'clock in the morning. News Photo Plan bali season at Varna Stanley Township Recreation Committee met Wednesday even- ing at the township hall. Plans for the upcoming ball season were discussed, and everyone interested in playing or coaching is asked to register by April 15 with Ross Whittaker. Tickets for the Dance on April 10 are sold out. Don't forget the Variety Night at Huron Centennial School on Thursday evening, April 15. Lots of fun is guaranteed. There will be musi- cal numbers, skits, dancing and lots of other surprises. Please come out and support the Ball Diamond Fund, The bus trip to Frankenmuth, Michigan in June will have to be cancelled if enough interest is not shown by April 3rd. We still need coaches and umpires for the ball program, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who has some time to spend on our young people. IThe annual meeting of the Stanley Federation of Agriculture was held at the Pineridge Chalet on Friday, March 26. Prior to the meeting, a banquet was held jointly with the Hay Township Federation, and following it, there was a dance. Mr. Jack Riddell was the guest speaker, and spoke on the effect of the Wage and Price Control Board on Marketing Boards. Retiring president John Paul Rau conducted the election of nine new directors, who• later chose Jake Van Wonderen as president and Jim Grainger as secretary -treasurer. Other direct- ors arc Russell Snider, Harvey Hayter, Gordon Porter, Wm'. McGregor, Jack Eckel, Wm. -Dowson and Harry Pennings. Mr. and Mrs. Grant Webster spent Saturday evening and Sun- day with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kuhl of Caryndale. With Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hunt last week was their daughter, Katherine Van Dop of Kitchener. Her husband. Richard also spent the weekend with them. Visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Chessell on Wednesday were her mother, Mrs. Jefferson of Cromarty, and her sister Laura, Mrs. Charles La Forge, and sons Chuck and Danny of Windsor. Mervyn Hayter returned home last Wednesday, after three weeks in Exeter hospital. We'd like to express the sincere sympathy of the commu- nity to Mrs. Harold Elliott in the loss of her husband last Thursday. The regulars at the coffee counter will miss him too. We wish Mrs. Elmer Hayter all the best in her new position of secretary of Huron -Perth Presbytery of the United Church Women.
