UC Presbytery concerned about health care
Huron -Perth Presbytery met in
Centralia United Church on Tues
day, February 24, with Rev.
Bert Daynard, Staffa, presiding,
Considerable concern was
expressed about the closing of
hospitals in the area. A commit-
tee was formed to draft letters
of protest to the Premier, Health
Minister Miller, The NDP and
Liberal Leaders and local M.P.P,s
Rev. John. Oestreicher of Wes-
ley -Willis United Church in
Clinton pointed out that people
are objecting on the grounds of
(1) increased dangers to health,
(2) the economic effects of un-
employment of about one hund-
red people, (3) the methods used
by the Health Minister to decide
and to convey the decision.
Rev. John Roberts of Belgrave,
stated that "the communities
have been ignored in the dec-
isions, local people were not
consulted...on statistics alone
a vital service can be withdrawn.'
Dr. Ross Crosby of St. Marys,
remarked that we must be conc-
erned about the "ministry of
healing" which is done by the
hospitals "for t'ieir people."
Rev. Fred i aist of St. John's,
Stratford made the point that
"Christ was a healing physic-
ian...(He) would have us care.
We are concerned because we
are Christians."
Others mentioned details
like the lack of any ambulance
in Clinton and the overcrowding
Foreseen in other area hospitals,
which are prevented by budget
cuts from adding staff. There was
a sense of moral indignation at
both the decisions and the way
they were implemented. For
example, ' the media carried
news of the Clinton closing
before the meeting with the
Hospital Board to "discuss"
such a decision was underway.
The Presbytery considered.
several possible ways to help
with the fight against such
arbitrary dealing with persons
under its care.
The members of Presbytery
were sorry to learn that two of
our missionaries in Angola are
missing since the upheavals
there. They are Dr. Elizabeth
Bridgman and Miss Edith Rad-
ley, Reg. N.

chairman, Bill Cochrane, Q.C.
Goderich announced Monday
that the Richard Ivey Foundation,
London is contributing $10,000
toward the Playhouse Capital
Fund.
"The funds are specifically
earmarked for lighting instru-
ments" said Mr. Cochrane, "and
brings the Playhouse that much
closer to matching its $60,000
Wintario grant. If we can qualify
soon enough, the Playhouse stage
lighting system will be installed
in time for the 1976 5th anniver-
sary season which previews on
June 29."
Members of the Playhouse
Board expressed appreciation
to the directors of the Richard
Ivey Foundation for their
confidence in the Playhouse
organization. "We are extremely
grateful", said Mr. Cochrane,
"for the vital role this foundation
has played in helping the Play-
house to establish itself."
Bill Amos, treasurer (Parkhill),
reported at the February meeting
that the Playhouse is within
sight of its goal. According to
the most recent financial state-
ment, the Playhouse has ex-
pended 5.189,704 in capital costs
toward the new building. The
total Playhouse portion is
$120,000, leaving the Playhouse,
at that point, within approxi-
mately $20,000 of its goal.
