ANOTHER GOOD STOP—Randy Lovie of the Exeter Hawks makes one of many good saves as Belmont puts on the pressure in Sunday night's Junior D playoff game at the Zurich arena. Hawks u News Photo lea playoff set 2 - 0 The Exeter Hawks with their two best performances of the year have jumped into a two game lead in the first round of playoffs in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" Western Division. In Belmont Saturday night, the Hawks scored an impressive 5-3 win over the Belmont Ron - wood Bombers and Sunday night in Zurich they repeated with a victory by a score of 5-2. The third game of the best -of - seven series will be played in Belmont tonight, Wednesday with the fourth game slated for the Zurich arena, Saturday night. Both games will start at 8.30 p.m. After Sunday's win in. Zurich, Hawks coach Glen "Rocky" Weiese said he was thrilled with his club's effort in the two weekend games but cautioned, "the series is far from over. Belmont is a super club." Wiese continued, "we are getting a good team effort. The boys are playing great positional hockey and are picking up their checks. The penalty killing turned in by Rick Ingram, .Don McKellar, Brian Taylor and Gerald Weido has been superb." The Exeter penalty killing came to the fore late in Saturday's game in Belmont when the Hawks played four men to five for two minutes and held the defending OHA champion Belmont boys at bay. Hawks manager Fred Mom- mersteeg cites two reasons for the improved play of his club. He listed excellent skating and their ability to stay out of the penalty box. The Hawks hopes of pulling an upset over Belmont were slowed a little when Steve Jen- nison suffered a fractured wrist, Sunday night. Mommesteeg commented, "We will certainly miss Steve but we have a good bunch of juveniles to draw from." In both weekend games, Belmont chalked up the first goal of the game and then went down to defeat. Manager Mom- mersteeg said this pattern has affected every game with Bel- mont this year. Sunday's game was scoreless through the first period and Belmont hit the scoreboard at 6.35 of the middle frame on a successful shot by Barry Landon. At 12.57 Paul Brooks evened the score for the Hawks as he converted a pass from Gerald Weido. With only 13 seconds left in the period, Weido put the Exeter club in front to stay on an unassisted effort. Scoring in the third period was confined to the last six and a half minutes as the Hawks kept up their relentless checking and positional play. John Van Gerwen put the Hawks into a 3-1 lead at 13.33 when he scored on a three-way combination with Ken Pinder and Noel Skinner. With three minutes to go, Phil Knight pulled off the neatest play of the night as he picked up the puck near his blueline and went all the way to score on an unassisted effort. At 18.59 Paul Buchanan gave the Bomber fans a little ray of hope as he found the scoring range but only 36 seconds later, Matt Muller hit the mark on a pass from Gerald Weido. Bei ort pr test Belmont have filed a protest with the OHA over the first two games in their series with the Exeter Hawks. Belmont, upset by the Hawks in both games, contend that Gerald Weido should not have played either game as he had been assessed a game mis- conduct in a February 7 contest between Exeter and Port Stanley. The penalty calls for a three -game suspension. However, Hawks officials point out that considerable confusion arose out of the inc- ident in question, and while the score sheet shows that Weido did receive a game mis- conduct in the second period, he played the balance of the game and scored a goal in the third period. SCORE EARLY The scoring pattern in Sat- urday's game in Belmont was quite different with all the scoring coming in the first two periods. Paul Logan of Belmont was first to register at 7.51 but the Hawks rebounded on a success- ful shot from the stick of Phil Knight on a pass from Rick' Ingram. Logan was back at 15.56 to regain the one goal edge for the Bombers. Not to be outdone by his Belmont opposition, Phil Knight fired his second goal of the gine at 17.06.
