Golden Glimpses
1 4 3
What a relief to step outside in
the early morning and hear the
crows cawing in the distance
rather than facing a blinding
snowstorm as we have been doing
for weeks.
Even the members of the
Ladies Auxiliary are thinking
towards summer since they have
just put their quilt up in the hobby
shop to be quilted for the bean
festival draw. No doubt you will
see it on display in the near future
and tickets will be available here
at the tuckshop and the office,
as well as from the Auxiliary
Members.
Films were enjoyed last Mon-
day evening, followed by refresh-
ments.
Many of our Residents would
welcome partners for cards
during the winter afternoons and
we would appreciate volunteers.
We welcome Mrs. Viola Unruh
as a new Resident. She is a
former resident of Plattsville
and a native of the Crediton area.
In the very near future, Mem-
bers will be receiving their yearly
financial statements and notices
of the annual meeting of the
Horne. The date set for the
annual meeting is March 16th
at 8:00 P.M. at the Home. It
will be an open meeting for all
interested people. and if you
have any questions concerning
the Maplewoods Apartments for
Seniors, which will be available
for occupancy in the early spring,
perhaps you should plan to
attend. I might also say that
applications for these apartments
are available at the office, and
several reservations have already
bean made.
We regret that Mrs. Alda
Simmons is a patient in South
Huron Hospital, Exeter.
The regular bingo was held on
Friday evening followed by re-
freshments.
The Sunday evening chapel
service vas conducted by Rev.
George Anderson of the Exeter
and Hensall Anglican churches.
The Residents have reported that
the new speaker installed in
the chapel by the Ladies Auxiliary
is a great asset and is very much
appreciated by them.

Frank Miller is about as popular as a
skunk at a garden party these days as he
makes his stealthy trips across the province
closing down hospitals.
Public reaction in this area has forced him
to change his thinking on the Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital, but that may possibly
mean he will just obtain the same saving by
putting the bolt on a couple of more general
hospitals than he originally intended.
The entire issue is not unlike the heated
debates that reverberated across the
province some years ago when rural schools
were closed in favor of larger. centralized
facilities.
The fact remains, of course, that people
don't object to such moves unless they feel
they will be adversely affected to some
degree. There is no suggestion that area
residents who fought the closing of the
Goderich hospital will continue their attack
against Miller on his decision to close the
Paris hospital for instance.

People are still caught in the situation
where they want the government to cut
spending, but they don't want those cuts to
affect them directly.
A TV news report last week showed a
Toronto hospital that had two floors comp-
pletely vacant, while another report showed
the violent reaction being generated by
those who may lose their jobs over the
closing of another Toronto hospital.
Obviously, Mr. Miller is deserving of the
criticisms heaped on him if health care is
being undermined in this province, but he's
on the right track if he can make cuts and
still provide the service people deserve.
Last week, the Ontario Medical Associa-
tion raised objections to the closing of
hospitals while at the same time announcing
increased fees for the 12,000 doctors in
Ontario.
Everyone wants to have his cake and eat
it too...and our economy just won't take it!
