Zurich Citizens News, 1976-02-11, Page 3Tuckersmith hires tag vendor
Tuckersmith Township council
hired Sander VanDorp, RR 5,
Clinton to sell dog tags in the
township. He was one of two
applicants interviewed at the
session of council Tuesday night,
Ben Bridges of Vanastra,
appeared before council, accom-
panied by Barry Black, to ask that
the decision to close the Fifth
Avenue entrance at No 4 Highway
be reversed. The entrance
declared a traffic hazard by pro-
vincial police and highway
officials, is slated for closure.
Reeve Elgin Thompson told
him council would take no action
but said Mr. Bridges could get
up a petition against the closing
when Mr. Bridges asked if a
petition would help.
Mr. Bridges complained about
a large truck parking on resident-
ial streets at Vanastra. He said
the Vanastra roads were not built
for large trucks and asked that a
sign "No Trucks Allowed" be
erected.
Council was asked to have a
larger sign for the Vanastra Road
erected at No 8 highway entrance
and that it be illuminated. The
Ministry of Transportation and
Communications will be asked by
council to provide this.
Among other complaints Mr.
Bridges listed was the renaming
of Quebec Road and Victoria
Boulevard. He said if a fire
occurred in a house on these
circular streets the firemen would
have trouble locating the house
and "would have to drive around
in circles looking for smoke".
Council accepted the resigna-
tion of Barbara Hodgins from the
Vanastra Day Care Centre
Board and will ask Mrs, Diane
Black to replace her. To fill the
other vacancy on the board result-
ing from the resignation of Mrs.
Carol. Munroe last month, Mrs.
Mervyn Falconer will be asked
to fill the position.
While agreeing that education
costs are getting out of hand,
council took no action on a resol-
ution presented by the Town of
Hanover to petition the Province
to set up a special commission to
examine all aspects of education;
Gran ;bra
ulldl
especially financing, Council was.
against setting up another costly
commission and one member
suggested the costs of the com-
mission itself would use up any
money saved.
Engineer Henry Uderstadt of
Orangeville will be asked to bring
in a report for the repair and
improvement, if necessary, of
the O'Brien Drain asetitioned
by E1don•O'Brien and others.
Passed for payment were the
following accounts: roads,
$15,279.05; general, $11,387.55;
Vanastra recreation, $9,893.24;
and Vanastra Day Care, $2,637.96
for a total of $39,197.80.
'' increases
R er fee
Grand Bend village council
approved an increase in the fee
for building permits to $25 from
a present $5. The change will
also extend the maximum value
of the work from $500 to $1,000
before a building permit is re-
quired.
Councillor Harold Green
strongly opposed the increase
and asked for a recorded vote to
register his opposition.
Councillor Bob Simpson who
introduced the increase, said the
cost of building inspections was
far exceeding the fee in most
cases. He said the fee should at
least cover the costs to the
village.
Mr. Simpson said he did not
feel it was fair to have all the
ratepayers in the village subsidize
those that were doing renovations
or building new structures.
He said the village paid out
$1,200 for inspections last yea:
over and above the money receiv•
ed from building permits.
