The village of Grand Bend
will initiate a program of clearing
snow banks from along the sides
of the main street.
Council debated the move for
some time before making the dec-
ision as it was pointed out the
plan could be quite costly if cont-
racted out to a construction firm.
Council finally instructed village
foreman Gary Desjardine to und-
ertake the project, hiring a temp-
orary assistant to drive the village
dump truck.
The project will be done a little
at a time as the foreman finds
he has time between regular
snowplowing duties. Council
said to avoid any problems, the
removal is to begin at one end
of the town and proceed to the
other. Only those stores open
during the winter will have the
snow cleared. Once all the year
round stores have been cleared of
snow banks, the foreman can
start on other areas.
Deputy -reeve Rollie Grenier
said he had received very few
complaints on snow plowing of
the village roads and said he
thought the foreman was doing
an excellent job.
The problem of snow buildup
on highway 21 was discussed.
Councillor Harold Green said he
had received a complaint regard-
ing the sidewalks on highway 21
not being plowed.
Reeve Bob Sharen agreed it
could be a problem, suggesting
someone was "going to get
clipped" while walking along the
side of the highway. Councillor
Simpson said that the snow build-
up on bridges was particularly
bad. Councillwill enquire with the
Ministry of Transportation and
Communication to determine if
special measures can be taken
for snow removal along highway

GB council wants
sewer cost estimate
At Monday night's meeting of
the Grand Bend village council,
the subject of storm sewers for
the village was discussed in depth ,
with representatives of the Klein-
feldt Group, consulting engineers
from London,
Works chairman Rollie Grenier
outlined the present storm
sewage system ' in the village
which is simply catch basins.
The exception is the main street
where a partial line carries runoff
water to the river.
Mr. Grenier said that the
catch basins drain off into the
sand but periodically become
clogged with silt on the bottom
and are cleaned out by the village
works department.
In discussing the adviseability
of installing storm' sewers in the
village, councillor Bill Baird
suggested that once the sanitary
sewers were installed, people
would be hooking into the system
with storm drains. He said this
would increase the amount of'"
water in the sanitary system,
not only increasing the cost of
treatment for the village but
seriously affecting the process at
the sewage lagoons.
"If we don't put in storm
sewers when sanitary sewers
are being installed we need our
heads read," commented council-
lor Bob Simpson.
After discussing various prob-
lems with the consultants, council
asked that a preliminary investi-
gation be done and an estimate
of a preliminary report be tabled
at a future meeting for consider-
ation.
