ThieI raises question again about utilities commission Four routine by-laws were passed by the council of the village of Zurich at their first meeting of the new year on Wed- nesday afternoon. By-law number one allows the reeve and clerk -treasurer to sign for borrowing 'up to $50,000 from the Bank of Montreal in Zurich during the fiscal year, as needed. The second by-law passed approved the appointment of Donnelly and Murphy of Goder- ich as solicitors for the munic- ipality. Authorization to execute a sub- division agreement with R.J.T. Holdings Ltd. was the third by- law approved at the meeting. According to reeve Fred Haberer the sub -division agreement with the Kitchener firm was to be signed on Friday afternoon, January 9, and this would mean that action could commence in building new homes in the south- east section of the village. The final by-law to be passed authorized the reeve and clerk - treasurer along with the chairman and secretary of the hydro and water system to sign a similar sub -division agreement with R.J.T. Holdings Ltd., regarding' services to the area. Considerable discussion took place regarding the renting of the old village office in Zurich, and council finally agreed that the building could be rented out "as is" on a temporary basis, depending on future plans of the fire area board. It has been indic- ated on several occasions that the board may wish to build an addition to the present fire hall to accommodate a tank truck. The matter of renting the office was left to reeve Fred Haberer. During a discussion on the minutes of the hydro and water committee of council, chairman of the finance committee, Ray McKinnon questioned whether the rate of 314 for each bill coll- ected for the sewage service was justified. "This seems like a Les help you own your home VG Member Canada Deposit insurance Corporation RIA a,id GREY TRUST COMPANY SINCE 1889 Kurt Bowman, Manager Main St., Exeter 235-0530 fairly high rate to charge for the collection service," he comment- ed. Leroy Thiel, chairman of the hydro and water committee, said the rate was set by man- ager Charles Eckel, using the actual costs involved as a guide- line. Zurich residents will now be issued one bill, covering hydro, water and sewage serv- ices. At this point in the meeting Mr. Thiel suggested that the hydro and water system would be better served by a Public Utilities Commission than by a committee of council. "It gets very complicated when you are trying to wear two hats," he add- ed. "Every time a dispute arises between the village and the hydro -water system a person doesn 't know where they should stand." No action was taken on Mr. Thiel 's suggestion, one which has been proposed on numerous occasions over the past few years. Atoms win one, stopped by GB During the past week the Zurich Atoms lost one and won one in local hockey action. Gold n Glimpses Citizens News, Jan. 14/76 -Page 7 s GLUE WATER REST HOME'S No doubt everyone who likes the outdoors and winter sports are enjoying the heavy snowfall and wintry weather that we have had during the past week. As usual, this time of the year is very quiet with little activity except that which is created within the Some. Many of the residents spend a great deal of time watching snow rem- oval equipment at work around the Honie and are fascinated by the activities across the way at the Maple Woods Apartments for senior citizens. Most of the out- side construction there has been completed and the inside work is progressing well. For anyone who might be interested, infor- mation on this apartment complex as well as application forms may be obtained at the office of the Home without obligation. Last Monday evening films were enjoyed followed by refresh- ments. The friends of Mr. George Hepburn will be glad to hear that he has returned from the hospital much improved. Friday evening bingo was play- ed followed by coffee. The sympathy of residents and staff is extended to the family of the late Miss Ethel Shaw. Rev. Bruce Pierce of Crediton conducted the Sunday evening chapel service.
