The Zurich Flyers experienced

The Hay Municipal Telephone
System has approved a contract
for the construction of a
telephone duct and manhole
system in Grand Bend. Con-
struction of the underground
conduit system has been awarded
to Thor B & 0 Limited of Thorn -
dale at a contract price of
$92,747.32. The consulting
engineering firm of M. M. Dillon
Ltd., London developed the
detailed plans and specifications
and are also supervising con-
struction of the system. The 4"
P.V.C. duct, manhole equipment
and other materials are being
supplied by the Hay Municipal
Telephone System.
Construction of the duct system
will take place on the following
streets: Ontario street from the
South Village Limit north to the
Walker Drain opposite the Grand
Cove Estates entrance; Lake
Road from Ontario Street west to
Pines Parkway; Main Street
from Ontario Street west to
Morena Lane; Hiway No. 81 from
Ontario Street east to a point
approximately 250' east of Gill
Road opposite the Patio Motel.
The new system will allow
placement of future feeder cables
to serve expansion of telephone
service within the Village and
outlying areas with a minimum
amount of construction required.
Present feeder cables; in service
since 1960, are filled to capacity.
New cables will be installed in the
duct system upon its completion
in May 1978.

System has approximately 1600

service calls to Port Franks,
Dashwood and Zurich.
second mark.
The Flyers countered with two
quick goals of their own, with Pat
Bedard and Marty . Becker
scoring, Kevin McKinnon and
Ron Desjardine assisted on the
goals.
The Merchants came back with
five successive goals of their own
to make it 6-2 at the end of the
first.
Midway through the second
period Goderich upped their
margin with another two goals.
Desjardine got that one back
for the Flyers with a goal at the
3:50 mark of the second with Pat
Bedard garnering the assist.
Four goals by Goderich put the
game out of reach for the Flyers.
Desjardine picked up his
second goal and fourth point of
the evening for the Flyers at
16:12 of the third.
Desjardine of the Flyers and
Charlie Robertson of Goderich
were named the two stars of the
gauze.
Sunday's game in Zurich
started off much the same way,
with Goderich scoring five
consecutive goals before Steve
Haberer scored for Zurich at
11:43 of the second period. Steve
Bedour assisted.
Three minutes latter, the same
pair combined with Bedour
scoring and Haberer picking up
the assist,
Goderich scored three third
period scores to put the game out
of reach.
Ron Desjardine of the Flyers
scored the final goal of the af-
Trustees support
hiking drinking age
The Huron County Board of
Education supported a move to
raise the legal drinking age in
Ontario to 19. The board agreed
with the raise in the drinking age
and will send its feelings on to
local and provincial government
officials supporting legislation
now in provincial legislature.
The Oxford County Board of
Education sent a letter to the
Huron board asking that it
support changes in legislation
which would result in raising the
drinking age. The Oxford board
felt that the present legislation
has resulted in "an unacceptable
situation in terms of its effect on
health, safety and morality".
The request from Oxford was
accompanied with comments
from Remo Mancini, M.P.P. for
Essex South, who has introduced
a private members' bill in the
legislature to have the legal
drinking age raised from 18 to 19.
The province lowered the
drinking age from 21 to 18 in 1971
but in recent years there has been
pressure fora raise in the age.
Mancini cited a 1976 Addiction
Research Foundation Survey
showing that among a sample of
1,439 high school students in
Ontario, 86 percent drank
although less than 25 percent
were of legal drinking age.
Mancini said his bill would
remove the practice of drinking
from the province's high schools.
• Despite increasing, support for
the raising of the drinking age the
bill is likely to pass according to a
survey of cabinet ministers. The
argument most frequently used
by the cabinet ministers is that it
would not be fair to allow a
person to vote at 18 yet not drink
until he turned 19.
Director of Education John
Cochrane supported that
reasoning and told the board that
the bill may be defeated on the
basis of the voting age being 18.
But Cochrane pointed out that
during the war there was a law
telling youngsters they had to
fight when they were 18 but
couldn't drink until they were 21.
