The Evangelical League is holding a Rally Day program on the evening of November 13, This promises to be very interesting as it is taking the form of an oratorical contest in which several' members of the League are taking part, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Witmer and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Perkins of Detroit, were weekend visitors at the home of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isiah Witmer of the Goshen Line, south. Mr, and Mrs, Gerhardt of Detroit, and Mrs. Brandon of Belgrave, were recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Horner. Reach pay settlement BYJEFF SEDDON The Huron County Board of Health and employees of the county health unit accepted an 18 - month agreement recently that sets out wage increases for 1977 and 1978. The board reported to county council Friday that the agreement gives employees of the health unit a six per cent increase in salary effective July 1, 1977 and four per cent effective January 1, 1978 subject to the approval of the Anti -Inflation Board. Other terms listed in the agreement were an increase in the employer's share of the -dental plan for employees from half to two-thirds of the cost ef- fective January 1, 1978. Mileage rates for employees using their own vehicles for health unit business was set at 21 cents per mile and employees required to work overtime will be paid time and a half or receive the equivalent time and one-half off. Public health inspectors supplied with leased vehicles who drive the vehicles to and from the office are now required to reimburse the county at the -rate of 16 cents per mile. When the present lease for vehicles expires there will be no personal use of the vehicles permitted under the new lease. The unit .employees also receive pay for Heritage Day or any other day proclaimed by the federal or provincial govern- ments as paid holidays. s 25 YEARS AGO November, 1952 Investors Syndicate of Canada, Limited announce the appoint- ment of Wm. Victor Dinnin, B.A. as zone manager for this area. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Mr. Dinnin has served -as school principal for several years. Halloween evening last Friday night, passed off very nicely and somewhat quiet around town as the next morning showed little signs of the pranks committed. The usual upturning of building and removal of anything not stationary, was not in evidence. The Unique Farm Forum met at the home of Mr, and Mrs. Carl Oestreicher for the first meeting of the winter season with 30 members and visitors present. Mr, Leonard Merner was elected chairman for the evening. A very lively discussion followed. _ 10 YEARS AGO November, 1967 "I am quite happy and pleased with the youth of Zurich and area," Corporal C.J. Mitchell, head of the Exeter detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police told the Citizens News on Wednesday following the quietest Halloween in the history of the community. Most of the store windows in the downtown area of Zurich even missed out of the usual soaping. The date for the official open- ing and dedication of the Zurich Area and Community Centre has been set for Friday, December 1. By this time the building com- mittee feel quite sure the entire project will be completed. The opening event committee con- sists of Herb Turkheim, chair- man; Dr. W.B. Coxon, Gordon Hess, all representing the coun- cil; Mrs. Isabel Gascho, representing the centennial com- mittee, and. Donald L. O'Brien, representing the Zurich Recrea- tion Committee. Miss Wanda Lawrence, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Lawrence, Zurich, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the Waterloo Lutheran University. Thank God every morning when you get up that you have something to do that day which must be done whether you like it or not. Being required to work and doing so to the best of your ability will breed in you self- control, diligence, contentment, and a hundred other virtues which the idle never know. WATCH OUT! — The intrepid Citizens News photographer managed to survive the barrage of bean bags that were aimed towards his way at the mother and daughter night held Thursday at St. Boniface Separate school. Dear Sir, I am writing to solicit help from your readers on locating in- formation on the history and operation of an early ear- thenware pottery established in Zurich in 1869 by Christian Hess and operating until about 1900. I am working on the history of potteries in Ontario and would appreciate hearing from any of your readers who would have any recollections of the pottery when it was operating, have any early photographs of the business that I could copy, pottery produced at the works or any other details of the business.
