MR. AND MRS. GERALD LATOUR
Lois Doerr and Gerald Latour exchanged marriage vows September
24 in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Zurich, with Rev. Andrew Blackwell
officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Milford Doerr,
Zurich and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Latour of
Stratford. The bride's attendants were Mrs. Ladeena Valland, sister of
the groom, Cathy Hamather and Cheryl Turkheim, friends of the bride.
Another friend, Diane Klopp, was maid -of -honour. Guests were
ushered by Glen Latour, brother of the groom, Robert Doerr, the
bride's brother and Terry Janke, a friend of the groom. Ron Schroeder,
also a friend, acted as best man. A dinner and reception was held at
the Dashwood Community Centre. After a honeymoon :trip to Florida,
the couple took up residence at 18 Main Street, Zurich.
How to grow things in
water and fertilizer
Hydroculture may be the an-
swer for busy home gardeners,
according to John Hughes,
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food horticulturist.
Hydroculture is a system of
gardening without conventional
soil mixtures. Plants draw
nutrients from a reservoir of
fertilized water.
The most interest in this
technique of gardening has come
from people in the plant main-
tenance business. Hydroculture
is attractive because it requires
less maintenance than the con-
ventional soil system and with
proper care many of the
problems associated with the
conventional system can be
avoided.
The technique is becoming
popular with companies which
rent plants to offices, plazas and
shopping centers.
Because the plant draws from
the reservoir of water, it is not
necessary to water as frequently
- the plant takes water as it needs
it. The "soil" used in
hydroculture is called heydite, a
coarse clay, which the plant uses
only for support.
Hydroculture may have ap-
plications for the busy home
gardener who is away for ex-
tended periods of time, says Mr.
Hughes. Using the reservoir of
water, houseplants can survive
without attention for more than a
week. The hydroculture system
may also prevent over -watering,
which often causes houseplant
deaths.
Hydroculture containers in a
variety of shapes and sizes are
available at most garden supply
centers, says Mr. Hughes.
