HARVEST TIME IN THE APPLE ORCHARD — Eighteen years ago
Harry Hartleib planted a half -acre in Dashwood with dwarf apple
trees so that he would have something to do when he retired from Lon-
don's Somerville Industries. The orchard has been keeping him so busy
since retirement that he says he sometimes thinks of going back to work
for a rest. Harry, who grew up in Dashwood, is shown here with some
of the fruits of his labour. Staff photo
County librarian addresses
Chamber of Commerce
William G. Partridge, chief
librarian of Huron County's
public library system, guest
speaker at the Thursday night
dinner meetings of Zurich and
District Chamber of Commerce
in the Dominion Hotel, outlined
the way the County, Library
r
Y
functions.
The main library is on
Lighthouse Street in Goderich.
Branches are located in 28
centres throughout Huron
County,
The County system has a
resource of 1,000 magazines,
12,000 paperbacks and 138,000
books, covering a wide range of
topics. The persons in charge of
the 28 branches make selections
and receive delivery of the books
that stock their centres and keep
track of which books or paper-
backs get used.
Besides the books, paperbacks
and magazines, a number of
films are stocked at the Goderich
centre. Microfilms are kept of
County newspapers, dating back
to early times. There is equip-
ment for reading the microfilms
in the libraries at Goderich and
Exeter. Talking books (recor-
dings on cassettes) are available
for persons who cannot see well.
Large -print books are also
available.
Mr. Partridge said that much
had been made of the library
resources this year, and that
class visits to the libraries had
been popular. Persons taking
adult education courses were
among the 30 percent of Huron
residents who had applied for and
filled out library cards. The cards
are free.
The library budget is provided
through grants from the
governments of Ontario and
Huron County, by municipalities,
Wintario, and fines.
There is a good supply of books
for boys and girls, from pre-
school age to high school. Branch
staff members will help parents
select reading material for
children.

Agriculture was the theme of
the October meeting of Zurich
Women's Institute.
Appropriately, when they met
October 3 in Hay Township Hall,
their guest speaker was Paul
Klopp, a graduate in Agriculture
Business Management from
Centralia Community College.
He gave an interesting and in-
formative talk on the college's
courses and the opportunities
derived from them. He also
showed slides of the campus, in
which various departments were
seen at work and social activities
were shown.
The poem, "October", was
read by Mary Pask. The group
was entertained by the Martin
brothers - Dwayne, Darcy and
Derek, and Paul Johnston, who
presented several musical
numbers. Mrs. Martin ac-
companied them on the piano.
During the business meeting,
presided over by Mrs. Newell
Geiger, an invitation was ac-
cepted from Kippen Institute, On
November 7 the Zurich group will
entertain Institute members
from Dashwood, Grand Bend and
Hensall at a dessert buffet.
A piano, recently purchased by
the Institute, is to be delivered in
time for the next meeting.
Mrs. W. Neeb and Mrs, N.
Geiger reported on the London
Area convention, held in
Vanastra. Mrs. H. Neeb gave a
report on the fall rally in Harwich
community centre.
The meeting was chaired by
Mrs. Harvey Hohner. Other
members of the committee in
charge were Mrs. Victor Dinnin,
Marcella Dietrich and Mary
Pask.
