Staff photo Singers entertain at Varna By MARY CHESSELL The Alethia (Greek for Truth) Singers of Exeter, a very fine group of singers and musicians, provided special music for the anniversary service at Varna United Church on Sunday. In the evening they presented a concert of sacred music and testimonials. Rev. Grant Mills of Exeter took his text from Romans 12, verses 11 and 12 of chapter 13, preaching on the subject "The Twenty -Fifth Hour". He reminded the congregation that nowhere in this text does it tell us what we should get if we are Christians, but rather the emphasis is on what we should be and what we should do. There are writers who think it is already too late to redeem the world, but Rev. Mills held out hope that there is still tirrie, if we make good use of it. Ed and Ida Godkin returned Friday night from a three-week trip to the west coast. They flew to Calgary, then took a bus tour to Banff, Kamloops, Vancouver and Victoria. Leaving the tour at Vancouver, they visited with relatives, Mrs. Richard Johnston in Vancouver, Stan Godkin at Haney, B.C., and Ed's sister, Mrs. Harold Grigg of Moose Jaw, whom he hadn't seen for eighteen years. Glen Dowson, Varna, and Mr. & Mrs. Keith Keys, Laurie, Gayle and Randy of Clinton, spent the weekend of September 10 in Niagara Falls.. Miss Donna Taylor is working at Cameo Hairstyling in the Mall at Stratford. If you left your bean plants standing when they finished bearing in July and haven't checked them lately, you may find you have a second crbp. Ours have an unusually good second crop, and we've been enjoying .them for the past couple of weeks. Doug McAsh, who coached the men's slowpitch ball team, and his wife, Mildred, entertained team members and their wives a t a party in their home on Saturday evening. They had a very good season, and there were lots of players out for most games. They're looking forward to having a team again next summer. Sport shorts .. In the consolation cham- pionship series for Recreation League baseball the Shaws defeated the Pats 13-0 Friday night. In other games last week, the DJ's defeated the Pontiacs 4-3 Wednesday in nine -innings and 3- 2 Monday in seven innings. A week ago Friday the Pats had defeated the Sunsets 9-1. • Play continues this week. Plans are still incomplete, so it will be a couple of weeks before a schedule is available. The annual meeting and registration night will be held September 29. SOFTBALL FINALS Homestead Park took the trophy this weekend in the ladies softball league series. In the playoff game Sunday they won 16-4 over the Bayfield Babes. The Babes had played Goderich's Menest Park team and won 10-5. Zurich's Stanley Stars struggled valiantly against Menest in the semi-finals • Saturday, only to lose 19-15. In other games Saturday, the. Babes defeated Pine Lake 44-4; and Homestead defeated the Bayfield Good Times 10-9. The games were played at Bayfield's ball park. TAE }RD ANNUAL VAN FEND FOUNDATION MR. AND MRS. KENNETH SEL IN Agnes Van Esbroeck and Kenneth Selin exchanged marriage vows August 27 at St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church in Zurich. The groom is the son of Mrs. Patricia Selin and the late Clifford Selin, North Bay and Mrs. and Mrs. Alois Van Esbroeck, Hensall are parents of the bride. The maid of honour was Martha Van Esbroeck and Lucy and Dorothy Van Esbroeck were bridesmaids. Daniel Selin was the best man and guests were ushered by George Van Esbroeck and John Selin.
