Bayfield senior apartments opened
Friday at 11 a.m. Bayfield saw
the official opening of the Senior
Citizens apartments on Jane St,
A.H. Le Masurier of the Ministry
of Housing acted as chairman,
Bayfield's Reeve Ed Oddleifson,
brought civic greetings. •Huron
County Warden D.A. McNeil
offered greetings on behalf of the
County. Remarks were heard
from R.E. (Bob) McKinley,
M.P., and Jack Riddell M.P.P.
All speakers had praise for the
architects, Coles and Skinner,
and for the contractors, Back and
McDougall. Huron County
Housing Authority Chairman,
W.H. Kniseley introduced his
committee and the area
manager, J.H. Lyndon,
Mr. Cook of the Ministry in
London introduced the principle
speaker, Frances McHale,
member of the Ontario Housing
Corporation board of directors,
who said she was pleased to be in
Bayfield, not only to participate
at the official opening but to visit
the attractive community , as
well. Federal and ,provincial
governments had provided the
funds, close to half a million
dollars. Ontario Housing Cor-
poration took part in its design
and arranged for construction.
The town's share was in its
operating costs. In a very real
sense, however, said Mrs.
McHale, it was the people who
lived here, who had built the
building. She said that currently
there were 4,000 senior citizen
units under construction.
Mrs. McHale said that a good
site had to be chosen and that the
apartments had to be designed for
independent, active living.
Probably one of the first con-
siderations to accepting such an
apartment was that one was able
to remain part of one's own
community. Freedom from
cutting grass, shovelling snow
and other maintenance chores
brought more independence
rather than less, she said; while
the rent scale protected tenants
against high rents and provided
them with a greater degree of
