The new owner, Franklin Roth of RR 3, Kippen, takes over Thursday, September 15. He has been raising pigs on a five -acre farm, Josiah Secord, who came to the village in 1854 and named it Varna after a Bulgarian seaport, opened the first store and post office the following year. They were in a more primitive building on the site of the present mill. Josiah built the existing building in 1875, according to Floyd McAsh's local history, "Varna in Review". In the 1890's there was a tailor shop upstairs. .A coal -heated iron, known as a goose, caused a fire one Sunday morning which nearly destroyed the entire building. A bucket brigade of villagers saved it, Some of the charred timbers may still be seen on the upper level. In 1901 Thomas McAsh took over as postmaster. Two years COUNTY OF HURON CARETAKER Required For County of Huron Full time employment. Ex- cellent working conditions and employee benefits. Apply in writing to the un- dersigned no later than 12 noon, Wednesday, October 5th, giving personal par- ticulars, previous employ- ment and references to: BILL G. MANLY Clerk — Treasurer, County of Huron, Courthouse, Goderich, Ont. later, however, he moved the post office into his new home next door,: There he also sold a few groceries. The building on the corner remained a general store till 1920, when Thomas' son, John, purchased the stock. From 1924 until 1933 it was a bank --- first the Standard Bank, then the Canadian Bank of Commerce. It finally was transformed into a chopping mill by William Reid in 1935. Mr. Reid used . a big Rumely tractor for power. In summer he threshed with it; in winter, used it to run the mill. After his death in 1941, Wilson McCartney ran the mill for two winters, also using a Rumely tractor for power. In 1943 John Aldington of Cromarty bought the mill and rebuilt it. He installed a feed mixer and a Ruston one -cylinder engine, which is still in use. Norman Smith, who worked for John for several years, says they found many strange things on the chop screen. John nearly always found a coin or two. Norm found a spoon, an orange, a live mouse — but never any money. In '57 John sold the mill to Hank Broeze, who had worked at Cann's Mill at Whalen's Corners for the previous six years, He installed grain cleaning and treating equipment and bulk grain receiving equipment. A few years later he added a molasses mixer. One of Hank's customers remarked recently that Hank provided the kind of service you can't always get these days. He would order and deliver things, such as wire for a farmer, and deliver small orders to people who had only a few acres. Mr Roth has purchased a bulk feed truck for the business. Norm Smith, who has been assisting Mr. Broeze since his illness a couple of years ago, will continue to run the mill for Mr. Roth. The Broezes are remaining in Varna. Villagers will still hear Hank's cheerful "Good morning" and have the services of Mrs. Broeze, an excellent seamstress.
