From the left are Joann and two other area contestants Karen Kernick and Beth Keys. photo by Wilma Oke Event at GB area farm Seek plowqueen candidates The 1977 Huron County "Queen of the Furrow" competition will be held in conjunction with the Huron County Plowing Match on September 17 at Allan Walper'ser1 s farm at R.R. 3, Parkhill, (2 miles south east of Grand Bend). Girls who are interested in this competition must be 16 years of age and not have reached their Handicapped choose logo The next time you see a round, green on white sticker, look again. It might be Alpha Huron's logo. The logo was chosen from several drafted by Alpha members. It will appear on letterheads and envelopes used by the Huron group. Just another way to keep us aware of the handicapped. Twenty-three Alpha members and friends enjoyed a barbecue at the home of Ralph and Pat Watson at Brussels. Cold, damp weather kept the group inside but all enjoyed the social time. Jim Hunsberger from Alpha London brought news that the Housing Brief for the Han- dicapped would be presented to Cabinet on September 29. Jim hopes that all who support the brief will alert the local M.P.P. Members agreed to rotate meetings, between Holmesville and Br ussels on a trial basis. Married or single and residing on a farm in Huron. All contestants will be expected to give a 3-5 minute talk on "Agriculture or The Inter- national Plowing Match." They will also have individual interviews by the judges and also each girl will be asked to give an impromptu speech. A luncheon will be held for the girls, compliments of Murray Gaunt M.P.P. Contestants will be expected on the site by 9 a.m. to plow. All contestants must make a strike out and plow two rounds on their land. If contestants require tractor and plow, notify com- mittee. A coaching day for plowing will be held on Thursday, September 15 1977. The Queen will receive the Maurice and Jean Love Trophy plus a leather coat from Bain - ton's Original Old Mill in Blyth, and $20 from the Association. All other contestants will receive $10 nlus a gift. $20 towards expenses to International Plowing Match. Girls interested in par- ticipating in the competition should contact: Mrs. Howard Datars, R.R. 1, Dashwood (237- 3567) or Mrs, John Clark, R.R. 5, Goderich (524-2569). Children of promise to make appearance The "Children of Promise" are coming to Canada ! This troupe of young Korean singers and folk dancers will present 19 concerts across Ontario during the month of September. The tour is sponsored by Compassion of Canada. These Korean performers will appear in Exeter, Monday, September 12, at Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church at 8 p.m. The concerts will include Korean folk songs and folk dancers, and North American gospel music, all arranged by Rick Powell, associated with the Bill Gaither Trio children's programs, Also featured is Miss Cha Soo Jung, an accomplished operatic soprano. The "Children of Promise" are six young girlsall of whom are sponsored through Compassion. WINNING WAYS: — In the under -six-month category at the Bayfield Fair's baby contest, first prize went to Aaron Carson, son of Rebecca and Douglas Carson of Toronto, who were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ed Carson of Bayfield. Megan Getty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Getty of London, came second; while Jonathan, son of Anita and Douglas Vanderhaar of RR 2, Bayfield, came third. Staff photo Compassion is a Christian child sponsorship agency whose work originated in Korea 25 years ago, and has now expanded to 24 countries. Each of the Children of Promise has a North American sponsor who provides food, clothing, and education for their child, through Compassion. On this tour, the "Children of Promise" are travelling ex- tensively through the United States and Canada. They perform in the traditional elaborate Korean costume. Miss Cha, the featured soloist, is at 24 a veteran of operatic performances. She has per- formed with the National Opera Company in Korea, and has been featured in leading roles. The six younger "Children of Promise" all 11 or 12 years old, are orphans or children from poverty-stricken families whose education has been made possible through the work of Compassion in Korea, The six girls are Kim Sun Jin, 12; Lee Ki Sun, 12; Pak Joo Jyung, 11; Kim Hyun Joo, 12; Yoon Yong Soom, 12; and Kim Jung Sook, 11, Jung Sook, the youngest of the troupe, comes from a backgroung typical of a Com- passion child. She has been raised in a Korean orphanage, sponsored by a North American Compassion family, whom she will meet while on this tour. She has one brother and two sisters, also living in the orphanage. Jung Sook will enter the fifth grade in March. Her favourite subjects are Social Studies and Art, and her ambition is to teach primary school when she grows up. But for Jung Sook, the biggest thing in life, right now, is the tour, as she meets hundreds of people from Canada and the United States, performs in dozens of cities, and shares en ter- tainment,fun,and a lot of love.
