It won third prize in the decorated float class. Aboard it with coach John Paul Rau, umpire Bernie Denomme and bat boy Danny Denomme were team members Susan Wassman, Lillian Laporte, Evelyn Jeffrey, Sharon Rau, Barbara Latour, Annette Denomme, Mary Lou Turkheim, Karen Erb, Marjorie Overholt and Maryanne Mommersteeg. The Zurich Buckeyes played in the Strathroy fastball tour- nament August 27 and August 28 and went to the B finals, only to A SPECTATOR AT THE BAYFIELD FAIR — Ted Leibold of Zurich relaxed and watched the com- ings, goings and carrying -on at the fairgrounds Saturday. Mr. Leibold, 'a well known area market gardener, lives with his wife in the Maplewoods Apartments. Staff photo Ball report for Zurich The Stanley Stars, the ladies softball league, went down fighting .in a game here Sunday afternoon against Menest Park of Goderich. They lost to the visitors 27-26 in a hard-fought game. One more game remains in the regular schedule for the Stars before the playoffs. It will be played next Sunday at Homestead, near Bayfield. In the girls' ball league, for those 14 and over, the Bluebirds emerged as winners. They took the final game of the season last Tuesday 22-2. In Recreation League baseball, the DJ's won over the Oil Bur- ners. They now lead 1-0 in the three -out -of -five series for grand champions. Whoever wins it plays the Pontiacs. In the consolation contest, the Sunsets beat the Pats 5-4 in the first game of a' three -out -of -five. series, The winner meets the Shaws. lose a tough 2-1 game to.; Blyth - wood. Zurich played Saturday, August. 27, against Franklin Electric of Strathroy and lost by a 3-2 score. Franklin Electric broke the 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the seventh. Bob Farquhar, with his first start of the year, pitched a four - hitter. Zurich picked up six hits. Rick Schilbe and Brian Hodgins had two hits each, while Paul Morrison and Ken Clarke picked up one apiece. Zurich's second game was against the Hawks. A strong pit- ching performance by Brian Hodgins led the Buckeyes to a 4-0 victory. Zurich scored two runs in the first and fifth innings, to account for their four runs. Zurich's first two runs were scored without the benefit of a hit. In the fifth the team scored two, as Pat Bedard singled, then scored on a double by Ken McKinnon, who in turn scored on a double by Ken Clarke. The other two hits were by Bob Farquhar and Brian Hodgins. In the B final Blythwood scored a run in the fourth on a walk, two pass balls and a single. Zurich tied the score in the fifth, as Wayne Clarke singled after moving to second, stole third, then came home on a bad throw by the catcher. Blythwood regained the lead in the sixth on a double and error and a bunt single. Zurich was unable to tie the score in the seventh. and lost the game 2-1. CORRECTION It was incorrectly reported in last week's paper that Pam O'Brien of Zurich (above) was second runner-up in the Bean Queen contest. Pam was first runner-up and Deb Creces, RR 1, Dashwood, was second runner- up. Sorry about that girls. Brian Hodgins again went the distance for Zurich and pitched a fine four -hitter despite the loss: Leading the Zurich hitters -were Steve Bedour and Wayne Clarke, with two hits apiece, while Cliff Gingerich picked up the only other hit. For finishing second in the B division, the Buckeyes got $25.
