Highways go metric
Ontario's highways began
switching to metric speed limit
signs on Tuesday. In the next two.
weeks the changeover will be
completed, till all show
kilometres instead of miles per
hour. Thirteen thousand miles of
highway are affected.
Here are the most important
metric speed limits to remem-
ber
40 km/h replaces 25 mph
50 km/h replaces 30 mph
80 km/h replaces 50 mph
100 km/h replaces 60 mph
School zone signs will be mark-
ed 25 kilometres per hour
(km/h), instead of the present 20
miles per hour.
The Minister of Transportation
and Communications, James
Snow, has warned that motorists
convicted of speeding offences
will be assessed demerit points
as usual, according to the rate of
speed over posted speed limits.

YOUR SPEEDOMETER
Drivers should familiarize themselves with the metric 'speed
conversion equivalents as shown on this speedometer. Cut it out
and paste it on the dashboard of your car. Scotch tape should do
the trick.
Remember, when you learn a new language it's best to think in
that language instead of translating from the familiar to the new
one. The key to learning the metric system is to "think metric" —
avoid, where you can, converting back to the old imperial units.
One way to do this is by associating specific measurements with
a visual experience or activity. For example, travelling 100 km will
take an hour of freeway driving at the speed limit.

has served children and families
for over sixty-five years, has
slowly changed its primary focus
of work.
At one time the agency was
mainly concerned with providing
shelter for unwanted and
deprived children. The agency
now stresses helping,
strengthening and assisting
families in their task of raising
children in this modern world.
Many parents encounter dif-
ficulties in the vital task of
raising children in a rapidly
changing world and parents have
few places to turn for con-
fidential, professional advice.
The Family and Children's
Services of Huron County, based
in Goderich, assists many
families cope with a wide variety
of family difficulties. The ,family
evolves through a number of
different stages and problems
can occur at any stage, for any
family.
The Family and Children's
Services offers counselling for
marriages, parents, children or
the entire family. Families with
children who tantrum frequently,
are hyperactive, disobedient,
sad, withdrawn, lazy, delinquent,
or, for any other reason, are hard
for the parents to manage, are
helped by the social work staff of
the agency. Often problems can
be resolved very quickly with
professional help.
The Family and Children's
Services of Huron County will
continue the services previously
offered by The Children's Aid
Society: these include marriage
and family counselling, parent
education and child behaviour
management counselling, ser-
vices to adolescents and their
families, programmes preven-
ting family breakdown and
protecting children, child abuse
programmes, foster care and
specialized care for children and
adolescents, counselling for
unmarried parents, adoption
services and a wide variety of
community service programmes.
Summonses will be issued in
either miles per hour or
kilometres per hour, depending
on signs posted during the
changeover period.
When the permissible speed is
exceeded by 50 km/h (31.1 mph)
or more, six demerit points will
be assessed; when it is exceeded
by 30 'km/h (18.6 mph) or more
and less than 50 km/h, four
demerit points will be assessed.
When it is exceeded by more
than 15 km/h (9.3 mph) and less
than 30 km/•h, three points will be
assessed.
(Current regulations assign six
demerit points for going over the
limit by 30 mph or more; four for
going over it by 20 to 29 mph; and
three for exceeding it by 11 to 19
mph.)
Since August 2 district main-
tenance crews have been
changing distance information
signs. Work on the speed limit
signs began Tuesday.
Notices are being posted at all
Ontario border crossings
reminding motorists from out-
side,the province that Ontario has
gone metric. Pamphlets on the
new system will be available at
United States -Ontario border
crossing points.
Ontario's changeover is part of
a nationwide conversion to the
metric system. It is already used
to measure highway speeds. and
distances in most countries.
A kilometre is shorter than a
mile: one mile equals 1.6
kilometres. The official 1977
Ontario road map gives distances
between points in kilometres.
Some cars already have dual -
reading speedometers. Starting
in 1978, new cars must all have
metric odometers and
speedometers. Overlay stickers
for dashboards of older cars can
be bought at some automotive
outlets.
Other highway signs such as
those for overhead clearance,
approaches to trafficsignals,
detours and other changes in
traffic patterns will also change
to metric.
Gasoline will be sold by the
litre instead of the imperial
gallon by 1979. A gallon contains
160 fluid ounces; whereas a litre
is slightly smaller than an im-
perial quart, which contains 40
ounces. Oil and anti -freeze will
also be sold in litre containers.
Eventually fuel pumps will be
changed to litres. Meanwhile, to
calculate gas consumption,
divide the number of kilometres
travelled by the number of
gallons used. To convert the
consumption figure to miles per
gallon, multiply kilometres per
gallon by 1.6.
Other fluid automotive
products will eventually be
measured in millilitres (mL). A
millilitre is one -thousandth of a
litre of 0.001 L.
Tire pressure will be affected
too, before the metric conversion
is complete. It will be measured
in kilopascals (kPa) instead of
pound force per square inch
(psi). To convert from the latter
to the former, multiply tire
pressure by seven.
Work to start
for seniors
Work is expected to begin this
week on the shuffleboard courts
and barbeque at the Maplewood
Apartments. They will be op-
posite the parking lot, near the
woods,
Area senior citizens recently
received a grant, which will pay
for the shuffleboard courts and
barbeque.
