Fair again a hit
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1977
.Crowds at Bayfield
The 121st annual Bayfield Fair
on Saturday was all that a rural
fair should be. Throngs of area
residents and tourists came early
and stayed late.
The show began shortly after
noon with a ° parade. Floats,
antique cars, ponies and riders,
decorated bicycles and tricycles,
novelty vehicles and costumed
walkers moved down Main Street
to the fair grounds, accompanied
Accidents down to
three this week
Only three accidents ,were
investigated by the Exeter OPP
this week, despite the heavy
traffic on area .highways over the
holiday weekend.
Two of the crashes occurred on
Friday, one involving a vehicle
driven by Richard Reaburn, RR
3, Dashwood. He lost control on
Stephen concession 16-17 and
went into the ditch.
Damage was listed at $300 by
Constable Ed. Ed Wilcox.
The other Friday accident
happened on concession 18-19 of
Stephen. A vehicle driven by
Jackie Delaney, RR 2 Kippen,
collided with a parked vehicle
owned by Bryan Hicks, RR 8,
Parkhill.
Constable Frank Giffin in-
vestigated and set damage at.
$500.
The other crash occurred on
Sunday when vehicles 'driven by
Bruce Phillips, London, and
Daniel Laporte, RR 2 Zurich,
collided on Highway 21, one mile
north of Highway 83.
Damage was estimated at
$1,700 by Constable Jim Rogers.
During the week, the local
detachment officers charged 22
people under the Highway Traffic
Aet, four under the Liquor
Licence Act, two under the
Criminal Code and one under the
Narcotic Control Act.

Special events during the af-
ternoon included foot, horse,
bicycle and novelty races;
contests in .log -sawing, nail
driving and egg throwing; and a
horseshoe pitching tournament.
Gunner, the frisbee -catching
dog, who had been advertised as
a feature at the South Shore
Marina, did not•show up. Nobody
seemed to mind greatly.
The baby show in the arena
shortly after 3 pm drew many
spectators. "How do you judge
babies?" a male onlooker was
heard asking in despair. It was no
cinch for the judges. In the under -
six -month class winners were:
Aaron Carson, first; Megan
Getty, second; and ' Jonathan
Vanderhaar, third. In the six-
month -to -one-year group, first
prize went to Jimmy Auld,
second to Michelle Fawcett and
third to David Rathwell.

multi -coloured quilts and han;
diwork, paintings, crafts, fruit
and vegetables, preserves, home
baking, flowers and plants —

Boniface School, Zurich: "Happy.
Because it'll be different again
and there'll be new friends and I
won't get bossed a lot."
MARK LAPORTE, age eight, go-
ing into grade three at St.
Boniface School: "Good. I like
gymn and math. I get tired of
having holidays."
JULIE MILLER, ctge 12, going into
.grade eight at Zurich Pubic
School: "I don't know. I don't
really want to go back to school.
I'd like to still have summer
holidays."

Zurich teams in
Goderich tourney
Two Zurich baseball teams
went to Goderich last weekend to
compete in the ninth annual
Goderich Industrial League
Softball Tournament, the largest
in Ontario. Although they did not
win, both acquitted themselves
well.
At 3.30 pm Saturday the Zurich
Buckeyes played in the first
round of B division fastball
against Fisher Body Builders of
Goderich. It was an eight -inning
game, which the Buckeyes lost 4-
3.
At 3 pm Sunday Zurich Comets
took on Goderich Paperleafs in
the first round of the slow -pitch
competition and wori 7-5. In their
next game, at 6 pm Sunday, they
were pitted against Winthrop,
who had earlier put down Twin
City Bombers. The Comets lost
this one 9-7. Both were 7 -inning
games.
Goderich's weekend of baseball
had its, beginning nine years ago
this weekend, when Gerry Pitre
organized the first tournament
for 12 Goderich teams. It
gradually grew and changed in
nature, till competitors were
being drawn from distances and
spectators numbered between
1,000. and 1,500.
Forty teams were entered in
this year's softball tournament
and an additional eight in the
slow -pitch contest, which was run
for the first time. With 48 teams
taking part, it was the largest
tournament to date. It was run in
three divisions — 16 in A, 24 in B
and eight in slow pitch. Umpires
were provided by the ,Ingersoll
Umpires Association.

Investigate
theft, damage
One theft and one act of wilful
damage are under investigation
by the Exeter OPP this week.
-A CB radio was stolen from a
car owned by Karolyn Gielnik,
Huron Park, on Wednesday. The
aerial was also ripped off the
vehicle.
The radio was valued at $110
and OPP Constable Dale Lamont
is investigating.
A Hensall woman, Sarah Wren,
advised police that the coil wires
and park plug wires were ripped
off her vehicle while she was
away on vacation. -
Damage was listed at $30 and
Constable Larry Christiaen is
investigating.
The OPP arelooking for the
ow1p.er of a 14 -foot Mayflower
sailboat which was found on the
Lake Huron beach near the
Bayview subdivision on Saturday
afternoon.
It is believed the boat may have
broken loose from its mooring
and drifted into Lake Huron. It
carried a U.S. registration.
The owner may claim the boat
by contacting the Exeter OPP
office.
