Lots of people dropping in
At least 450 visitors will be
"dropping in" on Goderich over
Labor Day weekend in what
organizers call the largest
skydiving event, of its kind in
Canada.
"There will be world record
attempts," Trace Whalen, the
program's director said. "There
will be anywhere from 30 to 60
skydivers trying to make for-
mations — circles, snowflakes
and that sort of thing."
The three-day event, which
starts September 3 at Sky Harbor
Airport, is sponsored by the
Goderich Old-timers Hockey
Club and is associated with
Jubilee Three, the town's 150th
birthday celebrations.
He is sure at least one record
will be broken, "The Canadian
record for a circle of divers about
20. That will probably be broken
the first day."
Whalen, who has never jumped
out of plane, said he has been
organizing the events for about
five months. When he started, he
hoped he could get about 30
skydivers to participate, After
working with some advertising
friends from Windsor who are
avid skydivers, "The thing just
mushroomed into a national
even!,"
An estimate of 450 divers is
probably conservative, he said,
and among them will be the best
in North America and some of the
best in the world.
There will be continuous
jumping from 9 a.m. until dusk
all three days. Divers will pay $3
per trip -- less than half the
usual cost, Whalen said.
Spectators will be charged $2
for adults and 50 cents for
children and they should
probably bring binoculars, he
said.
"When. they jump out of the
planes they'll be at up to 12,500
feel. You won't be able to see
them without binoculars."
Two hotels in town and some
campsites have been booked for
the divers, Whalen said, but
spectators will have to fend for
themselves.
