August 1902
Mr. Peter Munn of the eastern
part of Hay Township recently
harvested 500 bushels of wheat
grown on 15 acres of land.
J. Preeter has some
flannelettes and other dry -goods
that he is selling very cheap.
Deputy Chief Gundry and the
local constables are after a
horse -thief this week. The horse
was stolen at Goderich on
Wednesday.
W. J. Miller (of Hensall) sold
his nobby pneumatic tire buggy
to Gray Bros for a good price.
° Merner . Bros. are starting
their evaporator on Monday and
want to get as many good fall
apples as can be procured.
k According to statistics, out of
each 1,000 people in love 16
become hopelessly insane. The
other 984 are only temporarily
out of their heads.

The Ontario Gazette contains a
notice announcing that a stretch
of road from Lucan to Clinton
will be taken over by the Provin-
cial Highways department. Dur-
ing the early part of the year the
department made a survey of the
road with the view of putting
down a paved highway. The road
from London to Elginfield,
where it meets with the Sarnia
gravel, is being paved this year
and there is a detour on the way
to London.
A very interesting game of
baseball is being staged on the
Zurich Diamond this Friday
evening, when the Crediton nine
will be over and play the locals.
This is the last league game of
the season and everybody should
come out and see it.
Considerable of the fun was
taken out of a watermelon chase
at Jowett's Grove, Bayfield, on
Wednesday last, when Vera
Kalbfleisch, in the keen contest,
went through a barbed wire
fence. After she had received
medical attention her brother
took her home to Zurich.

New fences are being erected
just east of town by the Dept. of
Highways. The digging is very
hard and dry for the new posts,
but it will make a much wider
road allowance.
A most pleasant evening was
spent at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Kenneth Gingerich, in
honour of the latter's mother's
birthday and her aunt's, Mrs.
Roy Gingerich, who are twin
sisters.
Six and a half year old Audrey
Eckel, half stumbled, half crawl-
ed, to her home to get help for
her twin brother, Norman, after
they were both burned by a high-
voltage power line. They are
again playing happily with each
other. The twins suffered deep
burns to their arms and legs,
when they touched a live wire
while climbing to the top of an
apple tree in the orchard of their
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Eckel, Goshen Line, a few miles
north of Zurich, in Stanley
Township. Norman fell more
than 20 feet to• the ground after
contact with the Hydro line. His
sister managed to climb down
the tree and tell her parents of
the accident.

Delicious home -baked pork
and beans with all the trimmings
will be the feature of the second
annual Bean Festival in Zurich
this Saturday (August 26). -
An unexpected gift was
presented to ratepayers in the
village of Hensall last week, with
the announcement that the tax
rate for 1967 had been lowered by
the council, for most of the tax-
payers. -
, Baseball fever has hit a new
peak in the area during the past
couple of weeks, with two old
rivals, Zurich Kings, and the
Dashwood Tigers, battling for
the group championship. Prior to
last Sunday •afternoon, both
teams had won three games in
the best of seven series, and then
in the seventh and deciding game
the two teams battled to a thrill-
ing 5-5 nine -inning tie. (Zurich
edged out Dashwood 5-4 in
playoff game that followed.)

beans for seed, a special crop stored on the farm till spring, then sold to dealers for distribution to farmers.

day crop, planted in early June
and harvested by combine in
early September. Generally they
are scuffled soon after first
growth, then sprayed not long
afterward to keep down weeds.
They are marketed to can-
neries for use in bean soup and
pork and beans, or sold as dried
beans on supermarket shelves.
Farmers sometimes use the culls
as cattle feed.
