Wilson, P.C. 3629 Community Services Officer Due to the high rate of cottage break, enter and thefts throughout the Province, the On- tario Provincial Police have launched a "cottage security program" coupled with "opera- tion identification", These programs are being con- centrated on the cottages south of Goderich to the Grand Bend area this summer, by the Goderich Detachment. OPP Community Services Of- ficer for Huron County, Bill Wilson, is presenting the programs to the cottagers in a group preferably. The "cottage security program" involves a pamphlet which explains what to do when you leave your cottage as far as security of property in the cot- tage and the building is concern- ed. ZURICH the exact location of the cottage as to lot and concession, etc,, owner and address, police phone numbers and information as to what to do if damage, entry or theft occurs, is' issued to each owner of a cottage. The pamphlet is informative but the window sticker with OPP insignia and information is not only a deterrent to break and enter but if anyone needed the fire department, ambulance or police, the address and exact location of the cottage is there for expedient service. "Operation identification" is then explained to the cottagers. This is the process of marking personal property and items in your home or cottage so that if in the event the goods are stolen and recovered, you can identify your property and get it back, but the main idea is that stolen property has to have an owner before the thief or receiver of the stolen property can be charged and convicted of the offense against you. Without looking, can you give a complete description of your wrist watch, satisfactorily enough to convince a judge that it is yours??? ... So it is with most possessions. Most people could not identify their own property and if this property was to be stolen we, the police, would be unable to return it to you when recovered if proper identity could not be obtained from you ... the thief wins again! The OPP are promoting the use of a relatively new marking device called the "Brinks Securi- ty Marker". This pen writes with an invisible fluid which can only be detected by a special device. Every detachment of the OPP and most police departments now have these detecting devices. Of course the electric marking pencils . are still available to anyone, free of charge, at the Goderich Detachment, to mark your property. Your property should be mark- ed with a driver's licence number preferably and the province or state with it. If this number is used, your property can be identified anywhere in North America.
