Brussels capture second
rec softball tourney title
A well -knit hard -fighting team
from Brussels carried off the
1977 championship at the fastball
tournament here Saturday. It
was the second year the event
had been held in Zurich.
In the final round of the day-
long games, Brussels was pitted
against Exeter, took an early
lead and held it to the end, to win
4 to 1.
Games began at 8 a.m. Zurich
defeated Lieury 5 to 3 in the first
round; Exeter scored 1 to Clin-
ton's 0; Brussels 2 to South
Zorra's 0; and Elmira defeated
Goderich 2 to 0.
The fifth game, the first con-
solation semi-final, saw Lieury
take Clinton 8 to 1. In the sixth
game, the first championship
semi-final, Exeter defeated
Zurich 11 to 6. In the seventh
game, the second consolation
semi-final, South Zorra won over
Goderich 8 to 6. The eighth
game, the second, championship
semi-final, saw Brussels win 4 to
3 over Elmira.
The consolation final, between
South Zorra and Lieury, was a
tight contest, with no score for
either team till the middle of the
fifth inning. Lieury then scored
2. South Zorra scored '1 shortly
afterward, but never managed to
overcome the one -point lead of
the opposition. Lieury won 2 to 1.
Tempers grew frayed during
the daylong competition. Two
men, one from each team, were
ordered to the bench for scrap-
ping during the Lieury-South
Zorra consolation final, and one
from the Exeter team during the
championship playoff between
Exeter and Brussels.
Umpire -in -chief was Gary
Weir of Thamesford. Jim Bedard
of Zurich was official announcer
and score -keeper.
The double elimination tourna-
ment, ,sponsored by the Zurich
Recreation Board, was held last
year for the first time. Clinton
were the 1976 champions.
