On Saturday, August 6,
Bayfield and Grand Bend Pee
Wee Soccer Teams joined forces
to compete in a tournament in
Goderich. They won two games,
tied one and were all presented
with Bronze Medals.
On Sunday, August 7, Fred
Gale, Bayfield coach, and Dave
Silcock, Grand Bend coach,
formed an All-Star Mosquito
team to play for the Border Cup.
The boys were from Grand Bend,
Bayfield, Goderich and Seaforth,
Four boys from Bayfield, made
the team and played their first
game in Petrolia on Sunday.
They had a very good win of 8-1.
Darin Telford scored the first
goal and the team were very
proud of him, Bayfield boys on
the Border Team, along with
Darin, are Robbie Chapman,
Rick Johnston and Wayne Gale.
As a result of their own efforts,
the boys will be receiving new
track suits this week. They have
been selling tickets for a draw on
a pig August 25. It was to have
been held August 11; but some of
the boys who were holidaying had
not turned in their tickets, so the
draw -date was moved ahead two
weeks.
Sunday afternoon, the Bayfield
Lioness Club arranged an old-
time picnic in Clan Gregor
Square. Games, races, and a
peanut, gum and candy scramble
were enjoyed by children and
some adults. The Miller sisters of
Dashwood were guest en-
tertainers. The five girls played
guitars, tambourine, maracas
and snare -drum and cymbal and
sang "Amazing Grace" and "A
Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille."
The Bayfield Lions Goodtime
Band played several numbers
with Rose Taman on piano,
Bernice Fansher violin and
banjo, Ken Boyce, guitar, Ken
Knights, bass, Milvena Erickson,
spoons and tambourine. Laura
Taman did a step -dance number.
Eric Earl sang a Japanese song.
In the report about float win-
ners with Lions Carnival last
week, it was incorrectly reported
that the Bayfield Babes ball team
had taken third prize. This should
have read the -Goodtimes ball
team. The Goodtimes girls' team
is sponsored by Ron Whetstone
and coached by him and Bill
Talbot. Players include Barbara
Lindsay, Linda Talbot, Kate
Whetstone, Lorelie Bjerg, Shirley
Brandon, Pat Cooke (captain),
Karen Talbot, Matye Francis,
Joan Cluff, Diane Schiibe, Bonnie
Makins, Darlene Reder and
• Valerie Merner.
Don't forget about the
colouring contest sponsored by
the Bayfield Area Bluebird
Society for the fall fair. Children
under eight years of age may get
bluebird pictures to colour from
Harvey MacDougall or Betty
Burch.
The Bayfield Lioness Club is
planning a Dance -a -thou
Saturday, August 13. It will begin
at 8 p.m and continue until 8 a.m.
Proceeds e.o to the arena fund.
The Community Centre Board
and planning committee have
requested pre-engineered plans,
prices and suggestions from its
three companies and five con-
tractors who have shown in-
terest.
The village of Bayfield now has
a new fire truck. It cost about
$52,000.
The old truck has been kept as
a reserve unit and for use in
parades.
Mr, & Mrs. Frederick A. Erb,
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, will
be at their cottage on the lake till
Labour Day. Four of their
children, in Bayfield the weekend
of July 9, were Rick of Steamboat
Springs, Colorado, Wendy of New
York City, and Leslie and John of
Denver, Colorado. At that time
they had just returned from a
three-week camera -safari in
Kenya with their parents. Rick's
wife, Laurie, also accompanied
the family to Africa. The
weekend of July 9 she was in
Oakland, New York visiting her
family.
John is working in Royal Oak,
Michigan, this summer and will
spend the last 10 days of August
and early September at the
family cottage in Bayfield before
returning to the University of
Denver. Wendy hopes to come
from New York for Labour Day.
Their mother, the former
Barbara Morley, has holidayed
here since she was four years old.
Mrs. Janet McLean, daughter
Beth and son, Ian of Calgary,
Alberta, are visiting her parents,
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Burch.
Stars win
five in row
In the Ladies Softball League,
the Stanley Stars have carried off
five games in a row. They are
now at the mid -point of their
season, with five more games
schedule. Playoffs will be held in
September. -
They scored their most recent
victories Sunday by winning 15-13
over Homestead Park, and
Tuesday, August 2, over Meneset
Park 29-8.
District obituaries
Wallace Agar passed away in
Wingham & District Hospital on
Saturday August 6, 1977. Sur-
viving is his wife, the former
Freda Jane Turvey, daughter
Leila (Mrs. Charles Hay) Hen-
sall, Shirley (Mrs. Anthony Field,
Mississauga, Weida (Mrs.
Chester Higgins) Brussels,
Velma (Mrs. Bruce Hay)
Wroxeter. Also surviving are two
granddaughters, seven grand-
sons, one great grandson and
brother Fred in Killarney,
Manitoba. Funeral service was
held from the S.J. Walker
Funeral Home, Wingham
Monday at 2 p.m. Interment in
Wingham Cemetery.
