HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1977-08-03, Page 11Student volunteers assist atBluewat�r -Rest Home Six teen -aged girls from the' Zurich area are helping people, this summer at the Blue Water Rest Home, They are Patti Smith, Jackie and Karen Thornton of Zurich; Barbara Hoffman, RR 3, Zurich; and Christine Bleck and Elaine Love, both or RR1, Zurich. For one or two weeks at a time, they go daily to Blue Water, where they play cards, checkers and shuffleboard with some residents, and read to others, write letters for them or push their wheel -chairs. Mrs. Louis Farwell, president of the Ladies' Auxiliary, said the group responded to a newspaper appeal for helpers. They have more than met the auxiliary's hopes. A special get together for all the girls and their new friends is planned before school opens Seventeen year old Elaine Love, a grade 12 student at South Huron District High School, was in the midst of a euchre game when the Citizens News found her. Before this summer, she had no experience as a volunteer. "I like working with people", she said. Elaine also likes talking with the men and women who live there. "I've made a lot of really good friends", she said. One of her favourite spots is the hobby shop. She has lent a hand with 'quilting and helped make toy octopuses, among other things. In the hospital wing, Elaine sometimes helps feed patients. She is treasurer of her school's branch of YACMR, Youth Across Canada With the Mentally Retarded. The group organizes outings and activities that in- volve the retarded in community life, CARD SHARKS- It's hard to tell whether east -west partners are ahead of north -south in this euchre game, or the other way around. Elaine is one of six area high school girls working at Blue Water this summer.
