He's still going strong, after performing in 178 plays and 424 motion pictures - more than any other person except the late Donald Crisp. After flying into London Sunday night from California, he was driven to Grand Bend. Monday morning he began rehearsing the role of Uncle Stanley in "George Washington Slept Here", which is being staged at the Huron Country Playhouse August 9-13. "I'm a quick study", he said, when asked about the brief week's rehearsal before opening, and added that after 57 years of acting this should be no surprise. Arthritis has bent his slim body and gnarled his fingers. When he begins speaking, this is forgotten. He has a superb voice, flexible and resonant. Theatre is John Carradine's first love. He has played an in- credible variety of roles - from Othello to the Ragpicker in The Mad Woman of Chaillot. He quoted the famous American Shakespearean actor, Richard Mansfield, "Acting is a subjectaboutwhich a great deal may be learned, none of which may be taught." What aspiring actors ought to do, in his opinion; is acquire as many of the related skills as possible - speech, dan- cing, French, and so on. "The future of the theatre lies in community theatres and college theatres", he said. "There's no place to learn the business in this country (the United States)." In England young actors receive basic traiing in repertory theatre companies. When his own career began, the United States had over 100 repertory companies. "Today an actor may play only ten parts in his career", he said. He began in his teens in a New Orleans stock company. Briefly, before World War Two, he had his own repertory company at San Francisco's Ceary Theatre. Afterward, with the promise of $20,000 from. theatrical angel and the same company, he was ready. to begin again. His benefactor backed out, put his money into a New York show, and lost it all. Mr. Carradine shipped his scenery to New York. It was later used in summer stock productions. Nineteen forty-five was the first of several years on the summer theatre circuit. He remained in the east for seven and one-half years, then returned to California. During 1975 he again played in New York State summer theatres. In the early days, motion pictures were made in a way that at least paralleled legitimate theatre. "When they started making talkies, they shot in ' sequence." Now the set is the base of operation, not the sequence. It's an art for director or cameraman, rather than actor. Among the many movies in which he has had roles are Les Miserables, Cardinal Richelieu, Mary of Scotland, Captains Courageous, The Three Musketeers, Grapes of Wrath, Around the World in 80 Days and the Ten Commandments. Recently he has com.leted a ACTOR HERE -Noted actor and motion picture star,John Carradine, took a few minutes for a press interview at Grand Bend's Huron Country Playhouse Monday, before going into rehearsal for "George Washington Slept Here". The play opens next Tuesday. Staff Photo GOOD CONSTRUCTION (DWIGHT J. I don't get the chance very often", he said He owns a sea going sailboat, with auxiliary engine. Three of John Carradine's five sons are actors. David Carradine is well known as star of television's "Kung Fu". Robert played in another series, "Cowboy"; while Keith first made his mark in the movie, "Thieves Like Us." Of the three, David seems most to have taken to heart his•father's advice about learning related skills. When he applies himself to a study - be it piano, dancing, martial arts or meditation - he does so with intensity and usually succeeds. A chip off the old block.
