Unusual area crop
It's mostly for the birds
Just west of Zurich on highway
84, a five -acre field of sunflowers
is in full bloom.
This unusual crop has been
grown by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth
Gascho for almost 10 years. They
sell the seeds, which are rich in
protein, minerals and vitamins,
Mrs. Gascho says most of the
crop is used as bird seed. No
chemical fertilizers or herbicides
are used on the farm. Her
husband controls weeds in early
summer by scuffling the young
plants in the same way as the
beans growing next to them.
They are sown with a seed -drill
and harvested with a combine in
October when brown and dry.
The seeds are then bagged and
sold by the hundredweight..
The Gaschos have the kind of
respect for the earth as a living
entity that comes from a lifetime
of close association. They regard
chemicals as potential poisoners
of soil and water, so avoid using
them on their hundred acres.
Sunflower seeds have a long
tradition as human food in
Europe, but have never gained
the same popularity here.
Russian soldiers received them
as campaign rations, because

they were tasty, nutritious and
easy to carry. In Turkey people
still chew them the way North
Americans chew gum.
The big problem, when you
grow them yourself and like to
eat them, Mrs. Gascho said, is
how to remove the kernel from
the shell. She still hasn't found an
easy way.

agreed to have her picture taken beside the sunflowers in
her field. She and her husband are growing five acres of them
on their farm near the village.
Area 4-H members
to attend conference
During August 16,17 and 18,
several local 4-H club members,
fifteen to sixteen years of age,
will participate in the Regional 4-
There was a good attendance at
the Sunday evening song service,
sponsored by the Clinton
Christian Reformed Church and
led by Dick Roorda. Peggy
Slootegraaf sang three solo
numbers and provided her own
guitar accompaniment. Seven of
the younger children formed a
choir and sang several of the
familiar hymns.
A newly formed musical group
from the Clinton area, The
Greensleeves, entertained on
family night. John Newell is the
leader of the band and plays the
electric organ. Beatrice
Thompson and Janice Miller play
electric guitars and, along with
John, sing in harmony and in
parts for many of the songs. Pat
Thurlow thanked the entertainers
on behalf of the residents.
The weather has been ideal for
the outdoor barbecues. One was
held for each area during the past
two weeks.
Ed Stiles of Goderich en-
tertained on Thursday afternoon
with an hour of organ music. Mrs.
Geiger of Zurich, who was
visiting relatives at the home on
Thursday, led the sing -along.
