This unusual crop has been grown by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gascho for almost 10 years. They sell the seeds, which are rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, Mrs. Gascho says most of the crop is used as bird seed. No chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used on the farm. Her husband controls weeds in early summer by scuffling the young plants in the same way as the beans growing next to them. They are sown with a seed -drill and harvested with a combine in October when brown and dry. The seeds are then bagged and sold by the hundredweight.. The Gaschos have the kind of respect for the earth as a living entity that comes from a lifetime of close association. They regard chemicals as potential poisoners of soil and water, so avoid using them on their hundred acres. Sunflower seeds have a long tradition as human food in Europe, but have never gained the same popularity here. Russian soldiers received them as campaign rations, because Bring all your money problems Not just your savings — not just your loan problems — but every- thing to do with your money management, from home ownership plans to retirement savings plans to your estate executorship.
