the arena in Blyth on Saturday,
and the founding members heard
themselves described by guest
speaker Bob Carbert as "far-
sighted" people.
Carbert, former farm editor
for CKNX Television in
Wingham and now general
manager of the Ontario
Agricultural Museum at Milton,
said the 4-H organization is often
criticized because of its
emphasis on competition.
But, he said, "if you don't com-
pete in life, you gain nothing and
you end up in a rut,"
He told the 400 people at the

Area 4-H
enjoy beef
judging event
The fifth meeting of the Zurich
calf club was held on July 18 at
the home of Edgar Willert, an
area beef farmer, The members
opened the meeting with the 4-H
pledge.
Later, members judged four
beef calves (junior) and gave
reasons for their placings. This
was the second time members
had a beef judging session. It
served to familiarize them with
what to look for, such as confor-
mation.
Members were also given a
quiz on high quality milk and
marketing of the finished beef
animal. Following the quiz,
members suggested August 3rd
for visiting a dairy set-up in the
Parkhill area. Ideas were con-
sidered for the demonstration.
The group also made plans to
visit the Waterloo Cattle
Association sometime in
September:
We the willing,
Led by the unknowing,
Are doing the impossible,
For the ungrateful.

"in the past 25 years, 4-H has
proven that young people are the
country's greatest crop, a crop
that is just beginning to bear
fruit."
This year's group leaders'
association president, Bob Hern,
said 4-H is no longer just for
youngsters with farm
backgrounds but also offers "a
'wide range of clubs that urban
young people can enjoy."
He said there is an active ex-
change program for 4-H Club
members across North America
and that this year 36 young peo-
ple from Huron County spent 10
days visiting counterparts in
Ohio.
"Next year we hope to send
some to Quebec," he said.
