JOYCE BLACK Accountant 235-0530 the arena in Blyth on Saturday, and the founding members heard themselves described by guest speaker Bob Carbert as "far- sighted" people. Carbert, former farm editor for CKNX Television in Wingham and now general manager of the Ontario Agricultural Museum at Milton, said the 4-H organization is often criticized because of its emphasis on competition. But, he said, "if you don't com- pete in life, you gain nothing and you end up in a rut," He told the 400 people at the anniversary .celebrations that Area 4-H enjoy beef judging event The fifth meeting of the Zurich calf club was held on July 18 at the home of Edgar Willert, an area beef farmer, The members opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge. Later, members judged four beef calves (junior) and gave reasons for their placings. This was the second time members had a beef judging session. It served to familiarize them with what to look for, such as confor- mation. Members were also given a quiz on high quality milk and marketing of the finished beef animal. Following the quiz, members suggested August 3rd for visiting a dairy set-up in the Parkhill area. Ideas were con- sidered for the demonstration. The group also made plans to visit the Waterloo Cattle Association sometime in September: We the willing, Led by the unknowing, Are doing the impossible, For the ungrateful. This year's group leaders' association president, Bob Hern, said 4-H is no longer just for youngsters with farm backgrounds but also offers "a 'wide range of clubs that urban young people can enjoy." He said there is an active ex- change program for 4-H Club members across North America and that this year 36 young peo- ple from Huron County spent 10 days visiting counterparts in Ohio. "Next year we hope to send some to Quebec," he said.
