THE HAPPY HOOKUP
The old salts who make MerCruiser stern drives have assembled a few
observations in trailerology. Their motto is: "Look behind!" Before
beginning an extended trip, have the wheels checked for balance and the
bearings repacked with recommended grease. Balance and lubrication are
very critical. Vibration can quickly wear tires and bearings and loosen
wheel bolts and frame joints. Take a good look at the trailer hitch too. If it is
properly installed, you should have little to fear. Sometimes, however, an
anchoring bolt will pass through sheet metal which could weaken at that
point due to a bad jolt or fatigue. Trailer lights also take a beating from road
dirt, rocks and water. Check the system thoroughly for worn insulation and
evidence of corrosion. Carry spare bulbs in the trunk. Don't overlook the
tiedowns. Replace rotted, frayed fastenings, and look out for stitching that
is unraveling or lengths that have been stretched and have little elasticity.
