Monday last a group of ladies of St. Andrews United Church, U.C.W. met in the Church basement and made favours for the Clinton Hospital Trays to be placed on the trays for the month of July. Use safe jars for canning Using the right jars is very important for the success of home canning. Food specialists at the Ontario Food Council, Ministry of Agriculture and Food, say that there is often a temptation to use something like a peanut butter jar that you have on hand. This type of jarshould not be used for home canning. The lids of commercial jars from mayonnaise, peanut butter or coffee, although originally sealed, will neither reseal nor provide a vacuum. Standard size two-piece canning lids are designed only for use with mason jars. They do not fit the openings of mayonnaise, peanut butter and coffee jars well enough to produce a vacuum. Many commercial jars are not tempered to withstand the high temperatures and temperature changes that occur in home canning. These jars could easily break duringorafter processing, when using either a hotwater bath processor or a pressure canner. For successful home canning, proper jars must be used. Standard mason jars in pint and quart size are the only jars that are recommended for home canning. unuunnuuuunnunnuuuuuunnrunuuu Fun and good food for all.
