Crippled Kids society
At their regular meeting,
Monday, May 16, at the Dominion
Hotel, the members of the Zurich
Lions Club listened with rapt
attention as two representatives
of the Ontario Society for Crip-
pled Children described the
activities of the Society. Mr. John
Butler, of Toronto, who has
served as Supervisor of Service
Club Relations for the Society
since 1966, said that facilities and
services available for the
rehabilitation of the physically
handicapped are the best in the
world but inflation and the use of
new types of equipment result in
greatly increased costs.
Miss Doris Hanna, District
Nurse for Crippled Children,
CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Deichert, Zurich celebrated their 60th wedding an-
niversary Monday of this week, May 16. They were honoured at a
family party at the Hay township hall in Zurich, Saturday night and
Open House Sunday afternoon at their home on Main street in Zurich.
Mrs. Deichert was the former Josephine Kalbfleisch. They have seven
children. They are Mrs. Harvey (Edith) Hohner, Zurich; Mrs. Clifford
(Laura) Pepper, RR 1, Dashwood; Earl Deichert, Zurich; Mrs. Edgar
(Dorothy) Elligsen, Walton; Claire Deichert, Zurich; Miss Margaret
Deichert, Kitchener and Edward Deichert, Wingham. They also have 16
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Staff photo
described her work in helping
physically handicapped and their
families. She described in some
detail the causes and effects of
cerebral palsy. About sixty
physically handicapped receive
help in Huron County. There are
23,000 crippled children in Ontario
and 9000 of these require con-
tinual care.
Lion Russ • Grainger, who
arranged the program, and who
is himself a Director of the
Ontario Society for Crippled
Children, reported that over
$1600 has this year been donated
to the Society by residents of
Hensall, Zurich and Hay town-
ship.
Polio shots
There seems to be some con-
fusion about whether or not
adults need polio shots. The
answer is Yes!
There are relatively few cases
of polio being reported today,
although the disease is on the
increase in Central and South
America, two currently popular
vacation spots. Texas had one
case recently; London, England
reported several. So with jet
travel being what it is, shouldn't
you play it safe?
Adults' who have not been
immunized in the past five years
should get a "booster".
If you have never within
memory been immunized, a
complete course of immunization
is indicated: that is, a first shot,
followed by two boosters ap-
proximately 3 to 4 weeks apart.
Your Public Health Unit or
your family physician will give
you the necessary shots, and it's
all covered by OHIP.
