Need shown for six seniors units
A need for six rent -geared -to -
income housing units for the area
surrounding and including
Hensall has been established by
the Ministry of Housing council
learned at their regular meeting
Monday night.
Representatives from the
Ministry attended the meeting
with an official report on the
results of a senior citizen survey
sponsored by the Ministry at the
request of Hensall council to
determine the need for such
housing in the community.
The survey included Usborne
and Hay townships as well as the
village of Hensel', but out of the
610 surveys mailed to seniors,
only 27 were filled in and
returned. Out of those 27, one
person was ineligible, eleven
stated they were not interested in
such housing, nine expressed
some interest and demonstrated
some need and only six were very
interested and needy.
Due to the very low interest
shown through the survey Which
was conducted last October, the
Ontario Ministry of Housing will
not come into the village and
build any units as the cost would
be too prohibitive.
However, the ministry
representatives did remind
council they have at least six
needy seniors in the area and if
possible something should be
done for them.
One suggestion to council was
they participate in a rent sup-
plement program. In this
program, up to a maximum of 25
percent of a private apartment
building could, with the landlords
permission, be rented for rent -
geared -to -income housing with
the tenant having a normal
relationship with his or her
landlord but part of the rent being
paid by the three levels of
government.
The tenant would pay a rent
totalling no more than 25 percent
of his or her gross income. The
remainder of the rent charged by
the landlord would be paid by the
governments with the federal
government picking up 50 per-
cent of the provincial govern-
ment paying 421/2 percent and the
municipal government paying
71/2 percent.
In this manner those under the
rent -geared -to -income program
are integrated into, a building
with no stigma attached as other
residents do not know they are
being subsidized.
Another suggestion made to
council by the ministry was to
approach Zurich to see if an
agreement could be reached
concerning Hensall seniors
participating in the new Ontario
Housing project presently being
completed in the village.
Reeve Knight stated he has no
objections to attempting to
negotiate such a deal with Zurich
but added he doubted if anyone
could convince seniors who own
their own house in the village and
have lived there all their lives to
sell that house and move to
Zurich.
Council requested a breakdown
on the number of seniors who
expressed both interest and need
to see how many were actually in
the village and how many in the
other two townships.
Further actions concerning any
of the villages' alternatives will
be discussed after this figure is
reported to them. Says Reeve
Knight, "If any of those six
people are actually within the
village we should move quickly to
see if we can't somehow get
housing for them."

causes of black -outs of power.
In answering questions, Mr.
Metcalfe said that firms in in-
dustry are co-operating in
reducing their requirements and
he appealed to themembe,rs to do
their part in reducing the load
used for domestic purposes.
Power used in residences ac-
counts for about 20 percent of the
energy used, and that on street
lighting accounts for about 2
percent -but checks have in-
dicated that in residences, and
industry about fifty percent of the
energy is used needlessly. Power
conservation will be on school
courses.
Mr. Kenneth Gingerich
thanked Mr. Metcalfe for his
