Zurich Citizens News, 1977-06-20, Page 12Page 12 April 20, 1977 Play in Zurich Thursday Hawks win first two games against Stayner The Exeter Hawks solved the "mystery" of the Stayner arena with a 6-3 win Monday night, and moved to within two games of the Ontario championship as they also won the series opener in Zurich by a convincing 9-3 count, Sunday. It is believed to be the first loss suffered by the Siskins in their arena this year. The Hawks hardly knew what to expect in Stayner as their league cohorts from Tavistock had suffered two severe drubbings in the northern community. However, coach Ron Bogart indicated the Hawks may have felt at home in the Stayner facility. "It was just like walking into our old Exeter rink, only theirs is in worse shape," he commented. When asked for a prediction on the series, Bogart said he could do no better than quote Stayner coach Paul Carruthers during their conversation following Monday's win. Carruthers said if the Hawks continue to play as they have in the first two games, they should wrap the series up in four straight. Bogart said the Stayner coach indicated he was having a tough time keeping his team up for the finals in view of the fact they have been involved in them for the past four years. They won the title on two of those occasions. However, Bogart discounted that to a certain extent and said that while the Hawks may be hungrier, they were also a better team than Stayner. The series resumes in Zurich tonight (Thursday) at 8:00 p.m. and moves back to Stayner for an 8:30 contest on Friday. If a fifth game is necessary it will be back in Zurich on Sunday. The sixth game is in Stayner on Monday and the seventh would be in Zurich on Wednesday. All Zurich games are at 8:00 p.m. Come from behind Monday night's win in Stayner was accomplished with another of the Hawks patented come - from -behind performances after they fell behind by a 3-0 margin in the first period. However, three straight power play goals evened the count and Brian Taylor fired the winner in the final two minutes of the middle session. The Hawks added two in- surance tallies in the third period, the final one into an open net. Meanwhile, Randy Lovie was performing his stellar play at the other end of the rink and blanked the Siskins over the final 44 minutes of the game. Ken Pinder started the Hawks scoring with five minutes left in the first period when he teamed up with Fred Mommersteeg and Tom Hayter on their first power play attel'npt. Knight then evened the score at 3-3 after seven minutes of play with a solo dash down the ice while Exeter again enjoyed a man advantage. Taylor's winning tally came at the 18:46 mark as he finished off a play with Jennison. The teams battled on scoreless terms throughout most of the third period, before Taylor scored a clincher on an unassisted effort with four minutes remaining. Stayner lifted their goalie for an extra attacker and after Matt Muller bounced a shot off the post and the play went back into the Exeter end, defenceman Jim Ferguson scooped up the puck and skated to centre ice and then fired it into the open net. Don McKellar and Knight picked up assists. The Hawks out -shot Stayner by a 38-36 margin. "We were slow getting started as usual," commented Bogart, noting that the Hawks had not had a full warm-up. They were on the ice for only five minutes when the flooding machine was brought out. They had expected to be allowed to stay on until about 15 minutes before game time, but were shunted off a half hour earlier than that. Win going away In Sunday's opener played before 700 fans at the Zurich arena, the Hawks continued to receive some stellar net minding from Randy Lovie that enabled them to keep a slim lead until they displayed their devastating third period scoring in a 9-3 victory. They led by bnly one goal early in the third period, 'but came up with five straight tallies to win the game going away. Lovie was particularly brilliant in the first period when the Hawks played a man short for the first time against Stayner as he kicked out three point blank drives from Stayner attackers. Then, with a Stayner player sitting out an infraction, Exeter opened a 1-0 lead when Don McKellar shoved the goalie off a puck and then whipped the disc into the open net at the 10:27 mark. The Hawks boosted that lead to two goals four minutes later when a hard shot by Matt Muller hit the Stayner net minder on the shoulder and bounced over him into the net. Stayner cut the lead to 2-1 in the first minute of the second period, but Fred Mommersteeg got that one back at the mid -way mark when he and Ken Pinder broke in on one defender. Pinder's shot was blocked, but the rebound was quickly snapped up by Mom- mersteeg and he had an open corner at which to shoot. Stayner narrowed the count when they scored on an errant pass by an Exeter defender, but the homesters left the ice at the end of the second with a 4-2 margin when Brian Taylor deflected a point shot by Noel Skinner into the net. Stayner again came back in the early. minutes of the final period to narrow the count to 4-3 when Bill Priddle broke around a defender at the blueline to get a breakaway on Lovie. However, Exeter then took control of the game with their five tallies. Brian Taylor added two more to give him a hat trick for the night, while Fred Mom- mersteeg added his second. Scoring in single fashion in the final period were Gerald Weido and Phil Knight. Ken Pinder, Weido Noel Skinner and Tom Hayter picked up two assists each in the contest, while helping on one goal were Kim McKinnon, Don McKellar, Phil Knight, Steve Jennison and Taylor. Stayner coach Paul Carruthers switched his two goalies on two occasions, but neither was able to stop the Hawks. Game notes Linesman George Sweeney had some unusual debris to clear off the ice in the second period when a fan tossed a large sucker (fish variety) on the ice... manager Fred Mommersteeg made the important coin call which gives the Hawks home ice advantage for the fifth and seventh games if the series goes that far. . . Stayner Siskins play in a nine - team junior "C" loop during the season along with another "D" team from Schomberg. Some of the other teams are from Hunt- sville, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Orangeville, giving them some trips of over 100 miles.. . there are 10 of last year's Ontario championship team on this year's squad. Missing from last year are the goaltender and most of the defensive corps... Exeter picked up seven of the 12 minor penalties called, but scored on two of their power play chances and didn't allow any while playing short handed. u111111111111 11111111111nllnlnlinlUl1111Inifl111Nu Suzuki _ Goes the distance SUZUKI from the RM 80 =_ to the GS750 at 13 LLYGULL`L • SPORTS & RECREATION LIMITED Varna Ontario NOM 2R0 Diol 519-262-5809 7▪ 1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111115.
