Either that or there are a large number of people deliberately break- ing the law and by doing so are placing, a good many other people in jeopardy. There are signs at the main corner in Zurich which say "No Parking Here to Corner". These signs are there for a reason and that reason is a very good one. They are there to try and prevent accidents. It is necessary no cars be parked right at the corner because they obstruct the view of drivers attempting to negotiate the in- tersection. So often a vehicle pulling up to the corner has no way of seeing whether the way is clear to proceed or not because he cannot see past those cars parked tight to the cor- ner. Instead the driver must edge his car into the intersection until he can tell if the way is clear, hoping all the time another car or truck will not suddenly appear and an acci- dent result. But, you say, you only park your car there to run into the bank for a minute. Very well and fine, but a minute is all it takes for an accident to happen. How would you like to go through the rest of your life knowing your unthinking laziness caused someone else to lose their life. There have been serious accidents at that corner, we all know that. People have been killed there and more will be killed if we do not start doing something about those who ignore the safety of others park in that no parking zone. Maybe what we need is to have those cars ticketed a few times. Sometimes that type of person understands money when they will understand nothing else. It is not a matter to be taken lightly and we can only hope the people of this village and those who enter it will have some consideration for the safety of others and obey those no parking signs. Easter Seals The 1977 Easter Seal campaign is in full swing locally, with the overall provin- cial objective set at $2,300,000. There are almost 9000 physically handicapped youngsters who will be helped by the work of the Society for Crippled Children which is supported by this fund. As Frank Sinatra said recently in Toronto "the money you send to Easter Seals supports Canada's crippled children who are working themselves into shape. Life hasn't been easy for these kids, but they're fighters. This is one of the best in- vestments you can make. It won't return a penny to your pocket, but what you gain is in the heart." For more than fifty years the Ontario Society for Crippled Children has been devoted to the welfare of physically han- dicapped children. The facilities and services are available to any youngster in Ontario, whose restriction of activity produces a physical handicap. The objective is to assist physically -handicapped children to achieve their maximum potential by means of comprehensive treatment and training. Locally the Lions Club heads up the Easter Seal Campaign. Shafted To put it simply, we're being shafted. The provincial government's offer to help out Huron County municipalities with their burdensome snow removal costs has turned out to be a sham, while the Niagara region gets all the help. Probably only three townships in the county will get help of any kind in the form of extra subsidies to help them pay for clearing the white stuff away, and those will be pitifully small. Basically, it boils down to the government's way of formulating the extra subsidy. They will give us subsidy for 1977 only if our snow removal cost for this year exceed those of last year. Because last year, 1976, had an excep- tionally bad record for snow, particularly January, February, November and December, it would be very difficult to ex- ceed those figuresures by 20 per cent in only two months in 1977. What the Ontario government should have done, and what was requested by municipal officials in the snowbelt, was to average the last four years snow removal costs, and then base any extra, subsidy on cost over and above the average. The way it stands now, we will get nothing in the snowbelt, while the Niagara region, who haven't had a bad winter until now, will be well reimbursed, Clinton News -Record Spiing It is now officially spring, too bad ,,the weather man Even know how to read a calendar. so, the wintry weather over the weekend is surely the last dying throes of winter and not a sign of bad weather to come. Then perhaps I should apologize to everyone for the slight slideback into winter weather over the weekend, it was all my fault. I should have known better, but I did it anyway. I removed the shovel, extra boots, scarf, blankets, snow- mobile suit and candle from the back of my car figuring I would need them no more. Believe me, they are going back in the car and will stay there until the first of June at least. Spring, ah yes, it makes one think of summer with its warm sunny days and no scarves, no boots, no heavy coats, no hats, no gloves, no shovels, no digging, no freezing, no slipping and sliding, no blocked roads. Just imagine, getting up on a Saturday morning and put- ting on some cutoffs and a cod top and lazing around in the sun all day. In fact, this time of year those thoughts are so tempting I just naturally have to dig out all those summer clothes and try them on, just to get in the mood. I should know better, I do it every year and every year the same thing happens.I end up with bulges where there should be curves and somehow or other everything seems to have shrunk over the long winter months. So every year I decide this has got to stop. I must get back into shape to fit last year's clothes or else I'll have to hiber- nate for the summer aspunishment.Buying a new wardrobe every spring is just too too depressing. This year is no different, well, not much. This year I have decided I really must lose those 10 pounds. I know I've been talking about it for two years now and somehow they are still with me. I know I have tried every kind of diet ever in- vented, and they have all ended in disaster, but this year will be different, this year I'm going to do it. There is just one problem. You see, there is one very serious drawback to trying to lose weight. Usually, to do it you have to cut down on the amount of food you eat. Now for. some people this may be simple, but for others, like myself, this can turn into quite a problem. You see, the more I try to cut down on the amount of food I eat, the more thought I have to give to eating and the more I think about eating the more I want to eat and the more I want to eat the more I usually eat. It's a vicious circle and so far I have failed mis- erably at trying to diet. After all, it's embarrassing to go home for lunch and watch your very own mother eating hardly anything at all while you indulge in just one more scoop of gravy or break down and have that piece of chocolate cake. After all, my mother weighs about the same as I do, if she's on a diet, where does that leave me? But, this year is going to be different. This year I have decided I am going to succeed. No more slipping back, no more "splurging" just this once, no more sampling while I cook, no more scalloped potatoes, no more spaghetti. This year I'm going to lose that 10 pounds; I'm going to stop eating at home. I figure that's my only chance. FIRST WITH LOCAL NEWS Published Each Wednesday By J.W. Eody Publications Ltd.
