Their slides depicted the rugged landscape with its small amount of farm land in the valleys. Iceland has the Gulf Stream to warm its coastal waters. Thereby, fishing and shipping ports remain open all year. The many volcanoes have created scenic waterfalls and many inland rivers and lakes. Their schools when not in use are summer resorts. Homes are heated with hot water nature has provided. Temperatures range from 52 degrees F (11 Deg. C) in July and 30 degrees F (-1 Deg. C) in January. Snow is visible year round on mountain tops. Roads are of volcanic ash and stone. Ninety-eight percent of the Churches are Lutheran. All of this and only35 miles from Arctic circle. This was just a brief BLUE WATER REST HOME Golden Glimpses . . The robins' return, children on bicycles and the spring bulbs popping through the ground, all • say to me that spring is here even tho we should not rule out the odd snow squall between now and April. On Monday evening films were shown and we wish to thank Mr. Don O'Brien for delivering the films for us while our regular delivery service, Mr. Harold Erb was enjoying a vacation in Florida. We welcome Mr. Lambert Witmer as a new resident. He is a former resident of the Zurich and Dashwood area. On Tuesday evening the UCW of Dashwood United Church sponsored the birthday party for March. They conducted the devotional part of their meeting in the dining room followed by refreshments which included birthday cake and ice cream. Residents having birthdays during the month of March are Mrs. Jenny Hotson, Mr. Andrew Dougall. Mr. Fred Fowlie and Mr. William Passmore. Birthday gifts were presented, courtesy of the Ladies Auxiliary. On Thursday afternoon some of our residents went to Maplewoods Apartments for the movie at 2:00 p.m. On Thursday, March 17 at the regular times, the movie "Love Me To -night" starring 'Jeanette McDonald and Maurice Chevalier will be. shown. Now that the weather has improved B 8 perhaps people from Dashwood, Zurich and surrounding areas will be interested in attending. The movie will be shown at 7:30 in the evening if we have an audience. I might mention that the movie "The Other Side of the Mountain" was re -scheduled for showing April 7 at the usual times. I know there are both young and old who are interested in seeing this show and perhaps you should make a note of this date. We hope that you will be able to attend the bazaar, bake sale and tea being held in the recreation room of the Maplewoods this Saturday, March 19 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The draw for the -afghan and tatted doily will also be made at that time. A lot of work and planning has gone into this bazaar by the people of Maplewoods and we hope there will be a good attendance. On Friday afternoon, Miss Smith and her assistant of Goderich staged a puppet show here in the dining room. The residents seemed to enjoy this entertainment. Bingo was played on Friday evening followed by refresh- ments. The Sunday evening chapel service was conducted by Rev. Bruce Pierce of Crediton United Church. Mrs. Ed Finkbeiner presided at the organ and ac- companied the choir which consisted of Mrs. Helen Hey, Marguerite Finkbeiner, Gloria Martin and Mary Schlenker. 4-H girls prepare material for sewin ( By G. Schwartzentruber) Our meeting was held Wed- nesday, March 9, at Sch- wartzentruber's. Sylvia Neeb, our president, opened the meeting at 7 p.m. with the 4-H pledge. We answered the roll call by showing everyone our pattern and material. We also decided on a club name for ourselves. Mrs. Schwartzentruber and Mrs: B. Smith did some demonstrating. They explained staystitching and then showed us how it was done. You sew around the neckline and other curves to prevent stretching of your material. They also showed us the dif- ferent ways of marking the material. They are: tailor's tacks, chalk, tracing wheel. The tracing wheel seems to be the fastest and easiest way. We all got down to work. Some of the girls marked their material. Others still had to cut theirs out. The rest did a sample of the flat felled seam. The seniors were busy helping anyone who needed help. The meeting ended at 9:30 p.m. Yes, we do have it... • Toys • School & Office Supplies • CORO JEWELLERY • STATIONERY • GIFT WARE • HEALTH & BEAUTY AIDS GOSHEN ST., ZURICH 236-4941 outline of the slides viewed.
