The Canadian Council for National
Righteousness has called for the resigna-
tion of Federal Health Minister Marc
Lalonde. Their reason for doing so is anger
sparked by Mr. Lalonde's recent request
that the provinces set up abortion clinics
where hospitals are not available, en-
courage the establishment of abortion com-
mittees in existing hospitals and increase
funds going to local and provincial affiliates
of national and voluntary services.
The council stated in a press release they
feel by issuing such statements the govern-
ment of Canada is "deliberately promoting
the slaughter of the innocents". The coun-
cil goes on to say they are getting in touch
with the 4,000 churches they communicate
with and urging them to telegram or write
Mr. Trudeau concerning their objections to
such proposals.
All Mr. Lalonde is proposing is to in-
crease the fairness of the execution of the
present laws of this country concerning
abortion and family planning. He said
nothing about making abortions' free and
easy to obtain, he only said he wishes all
women of this land of ours to have equal
0
access to abortions according to the law.
We are not saying we think abortion
should be used as a means of contraception.
The point is, we are not willing to impose
our opinions on anyone.
We believe no government has the right
to tell an individual in this country what she
can or cannot do with her own body.
We do not agree that the Canadian Coun-
cil for National Righteousness has the
supreme right on their side and should be
allowed to force their personal beliefs on
all women in this country.
A woman is a thinking human being who
in our opinion has the right to decide for
herself what she will or will not do with her
own body.
We may not always agree with another
persons decision, but that decision must be
reached between that woman and her con-
science because in the end she is the one
who will have to live with her decision.
Mr. Lalonde is simply trying to assure
every woman has the same opportunity to
make her own decision under the laws of
our country.

Dear Editor:
The Huron Perth Lung
Association, your local Christ-
mas Seal Organization sincerely
appreciates the consideration
and co-operation of all facets of
the Community in the 1976-77
Campaign just completed. We
received $42,311.58,which is an all
time high for the area.
Special thanks to the local Post
Offices and Media for their
continued support. We are deeply
appreciative alae of the Church

Respiratory Disease is the
fastest growing health problem
on this continent and the most
common cause of absenteeism in
schools and industry. We are
rite
working to change this pattern in
educational, rehabilitative and
research programs. We can not
operate at all without the con-
stant assistance of the residents
of Huron and Perth counties.
Sincerely,

Congratulations to our novice team. They captured the A
Championship novice trophy last Saturday in a tournament
against Grand Bend, Bayfield and Goderich. Those boys
and their coaches have worked hard to win that trophy.
I must apologize to thein for not being there to get a pic-
ture of them in their moment of glory. I had planned to at-
tend but at the last minute was unable to make it.
Congratulations again, and I hope next season is just as
successful as this one has been.
I mentioned the litter on the streets last week, but as the
snowbanks continue to melt the problem becomes even
worse. The area around Shaw's dairy store was bad for a
while but I am very happy to say it has been cleaned up and
is now spotless. Let's keep it that way.
Please try and educate your children by explaining to
them just where garbage is supposed to go and then make
sure that is where they put it.
However, it will do no good to educate the children if they
see so-called adults littering as well. Why not start a cam-
paign to make a point of keeping litter in the garbage cans'
and setting an example for the children. Filthy streets do
little for a town's image and with the warm weather corn-
ing it looks much better to the increased amount of the traf-
fic passing through the village if they see clean, cared for
streets instead of gutter to gutter garbage.

Well, the Canadian government has done it again. This
time they say the artificial sweetener saccharine is a
cancer causing chemical and it is going to be banned from
the market.
The reason, so the government says, is that saccharine
has been found to cause cancer in rats who were fed the
sweetener over a prolonged period of time. The thing is, how
much of the sweetener were the rats fed,and for what length
of time?
Is the small amount a person may use in a cup of coffee or
get from a serving of diet pop really going to do them that
much harm? Were the rats saturated with saccharine as
rats have been saturated with other chemicals which have
also been banned by the government.
If saccharine is so dangerous, then why is the government
allowing it to remain to be sold in drugstores so diabetics
will not be completely deprived of its benefits while at the
same time ordering so many foods containing the sweetener
to be taken off the market?
It reminds me of that chemical weed killer which was
ordered off the market because it too was said to cause
cancer in rats. It turned out, if I recall correctly, that a rat
would have to eat about a truckload of grain a day over a
period of years to obtain comparable amounts of the
chemical.
Let's not carry these experiments too far. It would
probably be a pretty safe bet to say almost anything can kill
you if you take too much of it over a long period of time.
But what really gets me about this whole thing is how a
government can be so hypocritical. It will ban a chemical
sweetener from the market because the possibility exists
there may be some connection between the chemical and
cancer in rats. Yet that same government doesn't do a darn
thing about cigarettes and they have been proven beyond a
shadow of a doubt to contribute to lung cancer in even small
amounts.
Why I've never even heard of anyone dying from too much
saccharine, but how many friends and relatives have you
had who had lung cancer, or who wake up in the morning
hardly able to breathe because of the fouling effect of
cigarette smoke.
There is of course some logic to this hypocrisy.
Cigarettes supply a lot of money to the government of ours,
I guess saccharine doesn't. Money, that must be the name
of the game.
