seventy years in the retail business
The 70th anniversary of
Tieman's Hardware and Fur-
niture store in Dashwood is being
celebrated this month with a
gigantic store wide sale.
The business was established
on February 2, 1907 by the late
David Tieman. His son Mervyn
joined the firm in 1924 when he
finished high school in Exeter at
the age of 18 and still operates the
business.
Tieman's hardware business
began in the west end of the
Hartleib block at the north-west
side of main intersection in the
police village of Dashwood. Four
years ago the hardware and
furniture portions of the business
were joined together in the same
building.
In 1924 Tieman's took over the
furniture store business from the
late Peter Mclsaac,
The present building which is
located on the north side of Main
street, east of the main corner
was built in 1911 and until the
Tieman's took over in 1924 was
used by Peter Mcisaac as a
telephone office.
For 65 years Tieman's were
one of the top coal dealers in the
south part of Huron. Mervyn
Tieman said this week, "Dad, sold
his first ton of coal at $10. Now it's
about $83 a ton. We sold our last
about five years ago and it was
$40 then!'
The vehicle used for delivery
for coal and other hardware
merchandise from 1917 to 1939
was a Model T Ford purchased
from Milo Snell of Exeter in 1917
for $513.
Tieman's was the first firm in
Dashwood to sell gasoline, The
original pumps were of the
"blind" variety where the
operator pumped up one gallon at
a time,
Provincial regulations in the
late 1940's which stated gasoline
pumps must be at least eight feet
back from the road line forced
Tieman's to eliminate the gas
business.
Mervyn Tieman reminisced,
"The cheapest I remember
gasoline to be was 19 cents and
coal oil at 15 cents per gallon."
He continued, "In the old days
very little money changed hands
for hardware and our other
commodities. Farmers would
bring in eggs, butter and wood for
trading purposee."
Other popular items available
at Tieman's in the earlier days
were cement, cedar posts, farm
fencing, wood stoves, cross cut
saws, etc.
When David Tieman first
opened his hardware store in
1907, the business was open from
7 a.m. to 11 p.m. six days a week.
In the late '20's the evening hours
were cut back to Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday and
gradually reduced to the present
time when the only evening hours
are Fridays from early spring
until Christmas. •
The safe still used in the
business was purchased in Lucan
in 1919 by David Tieman and was
brought to Dashwood by a team
and wagon.
The business is now operated
by Mervyn Tieman and his wife
the former Alice, Hoffman. They
have two children Mrs. Bob
(Nancy) Stormes, St. Thomas and
Mrs Bob (Linda) Cornelius,
Sarnia.
OLD CASH REGISTER -- Mervyn Tieman is ready to operate the old
cash register for the 70th anniversary sale at Tieman s Furniture in
Dashwood. Mr. Tieman has been associated with the firm for the past
53 years.

The girls arrived at Mrs. Sch-
wartzentruber's, Wednesday,
March 2, at 7:00 p.m., all
eighteen of them. Many of them
were here for the first time.
After everyone stood and
repeated the 4-H pledge we had
our discussion. We talked about
what's in a sewing box and
choosing clothes for leisure,
among other things. We haven't
picked a name for our club yet
because we couldn't make up our
minds. We'll have a name for
ourselves by next week.
We elected our officers:
President, Sylvia Neeb;
Secretary, Lyn Snell; Treasurer,
Vicky Schroeder; Press reporter,
Grace Schwartzentruber.
After the business and
discussion, we did some group
work. A few of the girls had their
measurements taken, and others
hadn't even preshrunk their
material. We did that for them as
soon as they arrived.
While Lorraine was explaining
the pattern to the girls, one
beginner said to me, "Do you
767 know what she's talking about."
