HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1977-03-09, Page 2Page 2 Citizens News, March 9, 1977 Chamber of Commerce plans tour of Bendix The Zurich and District Chamber of Commerce met in the Dominion Hotel on March 3 with Spence Cummings, the Development officer for Huron County, as the guest speaker. "The Development Depart- ment," Mr. Cummings said, "Undertakes to point the way for meeting the needs of the various communities in the County." He also asked that the communities report their needs to his office so that they can be directed to departments and agencies concerned. He displayed brochures on several aspects of Huron County services and a brochure on the village of Zurich itself. These can be placed in stores, hotels, and other places where they may be seen and distributed. The speaker was introduced by Mr. Fred Haberer -and thanked by Jack Hamilton. The Chamber also heard briefly from Ted Doughty representing the South West Travel Association which is a venture endeavoring to attract tourism and industry to eight counties of Southwestern Ontario. During business at the dinner meeting Jack Eckel and Jack Hamilton were designated to represent the Zurich District Chamber at a meeting of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce on March 16. Mr. Ron Heimrich was appointed to sit on the planning board of the 1978 Ploughing Match. On April 4 the Chamber plans to take a tour of the recreational vehicles plant of Bendix Homes Systems in Hensall at 8 p.m. Members were asked to bring their wives and friend or two for this tour. During a question and answer period, the guest speaker, Mr. Cummings said there are frequent requests for information about docking facilities along Lake Huron and that there are plans developing towards a high- way access to the McDonald - Cartier Highway from some point west of Stratford. and possibly from Huron County. He also said that efforts are being made to encourage visitors to come from New York and Ohio as well as from Michigan and to remain for several days at a time and that there are industries making enquiries about facilities in towns the size of Zurich for possible location. An industrial book has been prepared to' hand out to persons andindustries making such enquiries. Theatre brings people together "Theatre brings people together and Huron Country Playhouse in particular, has made a positive impact on this region", said Bill Brady, well- known radio personality from CFPL, London, at the Playhouse Beaux -Art Bali on Saturday. Approximately 70 couples paid $25 to attend the gala event at Ausable Hall in Grand Bend. A five course meal with Canadian wines was served in a beautifully decorated setting. Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Bill Brady introduced The Smile Company, Toronto performers who volunteered their services by providing a witty review of past Playhouse musical productions. The fund raising event netted approximately $750 for the Playhouse. Many of the area's businesses donated food or services to assist the Playhouse. Len Evans, Chairman of the Board, was so pleased with.,the event that he hopes it will become an annual occasion. Larry Condon, MP for Mid- dlesex, was guest of honour. James Murphy, manager for the Huron Country Playhouse, used the occasion to announce the MR. AND MRS, RON DOUGALL Judy Miller and Ron Dougall exchang6d marriage vows on January 29 at Dashwood Lutheran Church. The wedding party was restricted at the time because of the blizzardy weather conditions and another ceremony was held on February 18. Rev. Mellecke officiated. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Miller, Dashwood and the groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dougall, Exeter. The maid of honour was Erika Freiter and the bridesmaids were Joanne and Bren- da Miller. The best man was Steve Faber and guests were ushered by Lorne Miller and Roger Dougall. 1977 summer season. The season, which will be the sixth for the Playhouse, opens Tuesday, July 5. New productions will open on Tuesday's. Most productions will play one week each, although some will repeat for a second week. The Playhouse season opener is Neil Simon's "Plaza Suite" (July 5-9), and includes "The Owl & The Pussy Cat" by Bill Manhoff (July 19-23), "Babes in Arms" by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart (July 26 -August 6), "George Washington Slept Here" by Moss Hart and George Kaufman (August 9-13), "See How They Run" by Phillip King (August 16- 20), and one additional produc- tion (July 12-16) which is to be announced. The final week (August 23-27) will be a repeat of one of the season's hits. Actors, directors and designers will be announced at a later date. The provincial government has implied such help will be available and a committee has been set up by the province to deal with such requests. Joe. Miller and Lionel Wilder have been appointed as council's representatives to the Huron County Farm Safety Association. A grant in the amount of $50 was given to the Huron County Ploughman's Association at their request.
