Fishermen ready nets
for upcoming season
McLeod Fisheries on the north
side of the Bayfield River, is busy
stringing nets in preparation for
their commercial season.
Stringing nets is an art in itself
and cannot be compared to the
factory made nets. The ones
strung by hand are far superior,
When we visited McLeod
Fisheries, owners Donald and
Kay McLeod were working on a
21/2 inch nylon mesh, and were
refilling some sideline already
equipped with corks and leads.
When finished and ready to be
set in the waters of Lake Huron,
they will measure 150 feet in
length. Nets also vary in mesh

size. When set in the water, the
gill nets hang in a vertical
position with the lead line at the
bottom and the cork line at the
top. These nets are set in straps,
which means that several nets
are joined to-gether to form a
long net. Several straps are set in
what is called gangs of nets.
The fish swim headlong into the
nets and when they try to back
out they are caught behind the
gills; thus the term, gill nets.
When the nets are strung and
made ready for use, they are laid
carefully in wooden boxes and
when fishing season opens th€
McLeod tugs, The "Ferroclad"
and the "W. J. McLeod" will be
aready for business.
The nets are set and after being
in the water usually a day, they
are lifted (taken out of the water
by a puller), the fish are picked
out of the nets and are filleted at
McLeod Fisheries for their retail
store and for wholesale shipping
to points in Canada and the
U.S.A.
