Zurich Citizens News, 1977-02-23, Page 2Citizens News, February 23, 1977 WATER MAIN BREAKS — This k the first broken water main in the village of Zurich this year, but PUC manager Charlie Eckel says the main on Victoria Street where the break occurred is part of the old system which was not replaced when the new lines were laid. As a result Mr. Eckel says it is quite possible the main simply rusted out, although the deep frost this year would not help matters any. photo by McKinley uron ch fir rural The University of Guelph Rural Development . Outreach Project (RDOP) has announced the selection of Huron County as its first pilot area. RDOP director Tony Fuller states that Project represen- tatives will begin working in Huron County this year. The RDOP staff describe Huron as being the most balanced county to represent a traditional rural area. 'will` be ing to on the idergoifg refs k-11 l .. alton and A second pilot area announced this sy represent rural areasa urban fringe and u; rapid change. The municipalities of Haldimand-Norfolk among others are being considered for this pilot area. Through the RDOP, explains Professor Fuller, the University of Guelph hopes to contribute to the process of rural development in Ontario by sharing more of its resources with rural people. The Project was initially funded in September of 1975 by a $557,350 grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan. The purpose of this seed money, says Professor Fuller is to find out what a university community can do to meet the needs of rural people and whether or not such a type of s ire .F ch 1 star %rroject program should be part of a university's role. One of the major reasons for choosing Huron is because the county has already opened the channels to reach the people. Huron is currently involved with rural planning at the municipal level, 'explains Professor Fuller, Chamber Continued from front page Chamber he has received a list of 34 students from the Zurich public school who are willing to ,4 l -snow for senior citizens in the community. Dr. Wallace was reappointed as the Chamber's representative to the Bluewater Rest Home Board of Directors. The Chamber paid a $25 membership fee to join the South Huron Association for the Mentally Retarded. Glenn Thiel reported to the Chamber on the progress of the annual Sauerkraut supper. This year the supper will be held on April 20 and Mr. Thiel hopes to have tickets available by the March meeting of the Chamber. Ms. Lumb noticed the date set for the sauerkraut supper especially appropriate. Sauerkraut is a German dish and April 20 is Hitler's birthday. involving township residents in the development of township planning. The planners are well equipped to handle the physical aspects of townships planning, he adds, but they feel unable to answer many questions which deal with the social and cultural implications of rural planning and develop- ment. The proposed integration of social and physical planning will be really unique in this province, says Professor Fuller, "The idea of rural planning and developing it with people in the townships we think is terrific, and we'd like to be a part of that." Through this initial contact with people, the RDOP staff, headed by Lynn Graham, program assistant, hopes to launch other activities. The in- volvement with township plan- ning will be limited to one par- ticular township, not yet chosen but the RDOP will also be in- volved on an overall county level. Members of the university community will consider requests from any village, community or individual in Huron County. This Professor Fuller stresses as one of the main objectives of the RDOP; to offer assistance where a need is defined and expressed by the rural people themselves.
