Zurich Citizens News, 1977-02-16, Page 2Page 2 Citizens News, February 16, 1977 Hay residents say roads poor Hay Township reeve Jack Tinney says his council listened to a delegation of ratepayers for over an hour concerning the condition of a section of road in Hay township. The road in question is the sideroad which runs from No. 84 highway to Dashwood, One member of the ratepayers delegation, Mrs. Jerome Ducharme said the delegation felt they had not gotten very far with council and were not satisfied that everyting that could be done for the road was being done, Reeve Tinney said the com- plaints concerning that par- ticular section of road have been coming in since last summer. However Mr. Tinney says he drove that section of road several times over the summer and "there was no where that you couldn't drive 50 miles per hour if you wanted to." The winter weather conditions have brought the complaints over the road condition to a head as some residents on the road say they never see the plowfordays at a time. Mrs. Ducharme said it was residents on the road who were doing most of the work to keep the road clear as it is sometimes late in the afternoon before the plow goes down the road to open it up. Mr. Tinney said the township tries to have all the roads open by noon whenever possible. "There are a few sections of road where we'll have to get heavy equipment out to clear it. However, we have made paths around those section so people can get in and out." Mr. Tinney said he felt the delegation was treated fairly at the council meeting. He said council listened to them for over one hour while they did " a lot of shouting and raving." However, Mr. Tinney says they "began to repeat themselves" so he in- formed them the discussion was at an end. "I never told them to leave the meeting, I just told them the interview was over" explained Mr. Tinney. All council meetings are public meetings. Mr. Tinney says he is still on speaking terms with the mem- bers of the delegation but feels their complaints are basically unwarranted. "That section of road is no rougher than any other," said Mr. Tinney. ti Mr. & Mrs. Cleve Gingerich, of C.G. OId arena lights for sale The Zurich Recreation Parks and Community Centre board has decided to sell the old arena lights in one lot for $200. If unable to sell them as a single • lot the price will then be $10 each. Skate-a-thon raises $800 Eight hundred dollars has been raised so far by two skate-a-thons sponsored by the Zurich -Grand Bend figure skating club. When . all the money has been turned in the organizers of the skate-a-thon hope the total will hit $1,000. The first skate-a-thon was held in the Zurich arena February 5 but poor weather conditions limited the number of skaters able to attend. To give more skaters a chance, another skate- a-thon was held in the arena last Saturday. Approximately sixty children participated. Top money earner of the Skate- a-thon was Kerry Lynn Deitz of Grand Bend with pledges totalling $155. Missy Sandilands of Grand Bend was second highest with sponsor pledges totalling $80. Darlene Oesch of Zurich was the third highest pledge earner as her sponsors pledged a total of $78. The organizers of the skate-a- thon would like to thank all the children who took part as well as those who sponsored them so generously. The board also decided to recommend that while the present electrical work is being done the arena board should install a 600 amp service to the building as a safety feature. The service now in the building has been overloaded in the past. Regular meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of each month ,at 8:30 p.m, Officers for the current year have been appointed and are as follows, chairman Lee Regier, secretary Ray McKinnon. The board also decided to discontinue the kitchen equip- ment usage fee being charged to caterers. The fee had originally been installed to reimburse the arena for $300 it had spent in updating the kitchen facilities. The board felt this money has now been recovered. Another factor in the dropping of the charge to caterers is the increased difficulty people are having in getting caterers to serve dinners at the arena and it is hoped the end of the kitchen charge could possibly help this condi tion We Had a Goal and We Made It!
