HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1977-02-09, Page 15Close game Colonials and Flyers battle to a tie SHIPKA 1 ZURICH 1 It was a closely fought battle Friday between the Zurich Flyers and the Shipka Colonials,. a battle which ended in a 1-1 tie. Both teams scored in the first period. Shipka took the lead in the first minute of play as Tom Richardson scored assisted by Steve Kadlecik and Mike Desjardine. Zurich fought for nine minutes before they managed to score as Steve Haberer fired one past the Shipka goalie to tie the score. Assists on the Zurich goal went to Steve Bedour and Randy McKinnon. The remaining two ,periods of hockey were close as both goalies put up an outstanding fight to keep the puck out of the net. As a result the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Stars of the game were Steve Bedour for Zurich and John Hayter for .Shipka. HBNSALL4ZURICH 10 In a game played Sunday the Flyers took a fast 4 to Olead in the first period of play and even- tually defeated Hensall by a score of 10 to 4. Zurich scored four consecutive goals in the first period of play Hawks ofeat ami a Inst The Exeter Hawks were able to see action in only one of two scheduled Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" games this week. Wednesday, the Hawks scored a decisive 9-3 victory over the Port Stanley Lions but Saturday night's important encounter with the Mitchell Hawks was post- poned because of the bad weather. The close battle for the first three positions in the league standings continues. The Exeter and Mitchell clubs are deadlocked for first place with 44 points apiece while the Tavistock Braves arein third spot only two points back. The three teams are virtually tied for first as Tavistock has played one game less than the other two teams. Tavistock has Pee Wees play to an easy victory By DAVID SMITH On Saturday, February 5, the Zurich Pee Wees made an easy victory over Goderich on their home ice by a score of 7 to 5. The main man for Zurich was Brian Horner, who skillfully put three goals by the Goderich goalie. The rest of the goals were singles which were scored by David Smith, Dean Armstrong, Mark Kirk and Rick Kuepfer. The Goderich scorers were Bowa and Telford each getting two and Fisher getting one. There was good goal tending by both teams but a few did slip by. Early in the second period Hensall made a short rally and Steve Knight scored to give Hensall a boost, but there the boost ended. Zurich pulverized the Hensall net with shots and managed to score five more goals in the second period. In the third the staunch Hensall team seemed to find strength from somewhere as they held Zurich to one goal while scoring three themselves. However, three was far from enough and the game ended with a score of Zurich 10, Hensall 4. Zurich goals were spread out as nearly every member of the team ort Stanley, itchell ptastpone four games remaining and the two Hawk clubs have three games each left. The Exeter team travels to Tavistock Friday night for a contest with the Braves and will be at home at the Zurich arena Sunday night to take on the Belmont Bombers. Game time is 8 p.m. • The postponed game with Mitchell has been rescheduled and will be played at the Zurich arena Tuesday night at 8.45 p.m. The Exeter Hawks goal ten- dering duo of Randy Lovie and Laurie Skinner have the best goals against record having allowed only 96 goals in 29 games for a 3.31 average. On the of- fensive side of the ledger the Hawks have scored 201 goals. Tavistock leads with 203, Get a late start It took the Hawks more than 29 minutes to get rolling in Wed- nesday's victory over Port Stanley. Ross Weaver of Port Stanley scored the only goal of the first period. At 9:14 of the middle frame, Gerald Weido scored his first of two goalsto tie the score. Assists went to Rick Ingram and Brian Taylor. Only 42 seconds later the Hawks jumped in front to stay on a successful shot by Matt Muller on a three-way combination with Don McKellar and Tom Hayter. Before the second period ended captain Steve Jennison converted a pass from Kim McKinnon and Rick Ingram hit the mark with passing help from Brian Taylor. In the third session Steve Jennison registered two goals and Rick Ingram and Gerald Weido each upped their goal total to two. Ingram's goal was unassisted as was one from the stick of Fred Mommersteeg. Matt Muller assisted on both of Jennison's markers and Dave Kinsman picked up one assist. The Exeter stars were Steve Jennison and Rick Ingram. Port Stanley took 10 of the 17 penalties called but only one affected the scoring. Dave Cyr was chosen star of the Zurich team with John Gould getting the star position for Hensall.
