water as many fences are completely buried in snow. There k also the added advantage of having the
snow outside the fences not packed down so if one of the braver steers does try and wander away he could
quite possibly sink up to his belly in snow. Photo by McKinley
Varna
At the annual Seaforth
Broomball Tournament last
weekend the Parr Line Men's
team was put out on Saturday,
but the ladies team went to the
semi-finals, and were defeated by
the Chiselhurst team on Sunday.
The February meeting of the
Varna United Church Women
was postponed for one week due
to bad weather.
It's a small world! A week ago
Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Bill Parker,
of Bayfield, who were holidaying
in Clearwater, Florida, went to
church, Sitting beside them were
Rev. and Mrs. Alex Taylor.
Mel and Lila Webster who
spent 10 days in Hawaii also had
chance meetings with people
from home. They met Arnold and
Nora Keys on the street in
Honolulu; and also ran into Mr. &
Mrs. Bill Campbell of Seaforth.
They enjoyed their stay in Hawaii
very much and stayed at the
Rainbow Towers, . where they
could look out over the ocean on
one side and the busy airport on
the other. On their tours of the
island they visited Pearl Harbour
and the Mormon Temple, saw the
pineapple and sugar plantations,
and large beeflots. They returned
home February 3.
Charles and Bernice Reid
returned home last week from a
holiday in Florida.
Ice carnival
in Varna
Residents of Stanley Township
are invited to the Ice Carnival to
be held on Saturday, February 12
at the Varna Arena. Family
skating will begin at 7 p.m. This
is not a costume carnival,
although there will be some
prizes awarded. A hockey
game—the ladies vs the girls—
will follow. The winners to be
awarded the Orange Lodge
Trophy which the ladies won last
year. The final event will be a
broomball game for men and
boys.
If they clown it up like they did
last year it will be a lot of fun to
watch. There will be a refresh-
ment booth at the Orange Hall.
Bring your hockey sticks and
your brooms; also bring along
your family and friends for a
good time on Saturday night.

Stanley council reject
Tuckersmith request
It was Friday before Stanley
council was able to hold its
regular February meeting
originally scheduled for Monday.
Poor weather conditions caused
the meeting to be postponed
several times.
At the meeting Stanley council
rejected a request from
Tuckersmith council that Stanley
pay a portion of the costs of the
Day Care Centre in Vanastra.
Stanley clerk Mel Graham said
while Stanley may have one or
two families using the day care
centre they are not sure exactly
how many there are.
Council did pass a resolution
concerning taxation. The
resolution calls for an amend-
ment to the provincial tax laws to
allow village and town taxes on
homes and property to be an ex-
pense on a person's income tax.
A bylaw to borrow up to
$210,000 to use as funds until the
taxes are collected was passed.
Council approved grants of $35
to the Huron Central Agricultural
Society, $20 to St. John's
Ambulance and $20 to the Onario
March of Dimes.
Last year Stanley was allotted
a further $40,000 for tile drainage
to raise the total amount given
out in tile drainage loans in the
township to $126,600. This raised
the percentage loans given out
last year from 60 percent with a
$4,000 limit to 75 percent with no
limit.
Starting March 15 hearings will
be held on Stanley's secondary
plan in the Varna hall at 8 p.m.
The hearings will be held every
Tuesday evening beginning
March 15 and running for five
weeks all at the same time and
place.
