Rural mart delivery returns
Monday was the first time in
nine days that mail has been
distributed from the Zurich post
office to rural routes in the Zurich
area.
Stormy weather blocked roads
and kept them blocked making it
impossible for the rural mailman
to make their deliveries.
R.R. 1 Zurich did fair better
than the other two rural routes as
Duart McAdams delivered the
mail to the doors of home owners
along that route by, what else,
snowmobile. However, even with
the snowmobile he was only able
to get the mail through twice
during those nine days.
People living on all three rural
routes were a great help to the
post office during the nine day
siege according to employee
Linda Neeb.
"Just about all the people on
the rural routes would get into
town to collect their mail" said
Ms, Neeb, "one person would
sometimes get through to collect
the mail for the entire line." she
explained.
This helped to keep the post
office from being completely
swamped by a backlog of rural
mail, newspapers and junk mail.
"We only have a small space
for mailing," said Ms. Neeb,
"and with the newspapers and
rural mail lying around it gets
pretty crowded in here."
Luckily for the post office, mail
was also slow being delivered
from other areas due to road and
weather conditions and the
Zurich post office was able to
cope with the situation.
But, it seems there is
something which does stop the
mail from going through. It may
not be sleet or rain, but when the
winds blow across Lake Huron
for days at a time, even the mail
can't negotiate the roads.
THANKS FOR THE TOW -- Ron Heimrich needed a little help getting his car out his lane in Zurich last
week. Above, Mr. Heimrich drives the car as Chuck Erb gives him a tow while Jim Parkins throws up his
arms in victory as the car moves.

Hay finalizes fire agreement
Hay Council signed the
finalized fire agreement with
Dashwood at a council meeting
held last Tuesday night. The
agreement differs from last
years in several areas.
Last year's agreement had Hay
paying Dashwood a flat retainer
of $1200. This year the retainer
will be three mills in the assessed
area, a total of $1372.70. Last
year's charge for the first hour of
a fire call was $90 with each
additional hour being $75. This
year the charge for the first hour
will be $125 with each additional
hour costing $100.
Also new in the agreement is a
$50 per hour charge for the water
tanker recently purchased by
Dashwood.
An application by W.B.R.
Incorporated to sever part of Lot
15, Concession 1 was rejected by
council, but two other severance
applications were approved,
They are Robert Hoffman's
application to sever Lot 22
Concession South Boundary and
Gerald Regier's application to
sever Lots 13 and 14 Concession
10.
Hay township has decided to
engage the services of Harvey
Clausius as building inspector,
and in the future all building
permits will be issued by him not
the clerks office. Mr. Clausius is
also building inspector for the
village of Zurich.
Council requested a meeting be
held with Hensall and B. M. Ross
Associates in regards to the
proposed storm sewer outlets for
the village.
A request has been made to the
Ministry of Transportation for an
additional subsidy for road ex-
penditures. The increased cost of
snow removal has seriously
depleted the township's road
budget and additional funds
would be very helpful to enable
the township to do some work on
the township roads this summer.
One application was received
and approved for a tile drain loan
in the amount of $7500.
Two members of council were
authorized to attend the Rural
Ontario Municipal Association
Convention being held in Toronto
this week.
cklog of accidents
The Exeter OPP detachment
officers are slowly clearing the -
backlog of accident reports
following the severe winter
driving conditions of the past
three weeks which resulted in
over 40 accidents.
However, another seven were
added to their list this week, most
of them occurring during white-
outs on area roads before the
weather finally cleared on
Sunday.
OPP Cpl. Ray Brooks said
damage in those seven accidents
was $8,755 and there was one.
minor injury reported. The
reports were not completed to
provide details of the crashes at
this time.
To add to their woes, the police
were advised that seven cottages
at Poplar Beach were broken into
during the past couple of weeks
and these are now being in-
vestigated by Constable Bill
McIntyre.
Because many of the owners
have been unable to get to their
cottages, there has been no
verification of thefts.
Last week, Constable McIntyre
recovered $485 in stolen property.
These were mainly CB radios
that had been stolen from cars in
the area earlier in the year.
Other statistics contained in
the weekly press release were as
follows: 10 vehicles removed
from roads to facilitate snow
plowing, one wilful damage, one
theft, one dog bite, two domestic
complaints, one insecure premise
and one impaired driver. Two
juveniles were reported missing
but both were located.
I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE — This car almost made it out the kine
before the snow became just too much. Even if it had made it cis far as
the road; that would be as far as it could go as the road itself was also
blocked With snow, photo by McKinley
