HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1977-01-12, Page 15is Hold second place Citizens News, January 12, 1977 Page 15 Hawks win two games .out of three The battle for first place in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" Western division continues to be close and ex- citing, At the moment the Mitchell Hawks and Tavistock Braves are deadlocked for first place with 35 points apiece and the Exeter Hawks are only one point farther back in second spot with 34 points. The Tavistock club enjoys two games in hand on Exeter and three on Mitchell and in the im- portant loss column has only four while their two close op- ponents have each dropped a half dozen games. The Exeter Hawks won two of three games played over the weekend. Friday in Seaforth the Hawks scored an 8-2 win but they then split two games with the Lucan Irish. In Hensall Saturday night, the Irish triumphed by a score of 7-6 and in Zurich Sunday, the Hawks regained their winning ways by downing Lucan 7-3. The Tavistock cause received another boost Saturday when Mt. Brydges downed Mitchell 8-5. The Hawks continue to lead the league in a defensive way having given up the fewest goals, 80. In scoring they are behind Tavistock, Mt. Brydges and Mitchell, The only outing for the Exeter juniors this week will be Sunday night when they play host to Thamesford. The game will get underway at 8 p.m. at the Zurich arena. Start early Against Lucan Sunday night, the Hawks built up an early 5-0 lead before the Irish -could hit the scoreboard midway through the second period. Don McKellar registered two of the first period scores for the Hawks. Both came on, passes from Kim McKinnon. Also scor- ing in the first 20 minutes of play was Ken Pinder on a three-way effort with Fred Mommersteeg and Steve Jennison, Ken Pinder was back with his second successful shot early in the middle frame on a play started by John Van Gerwen and Noel Skinner converted a pass from Fred. Mommersteeg. Jim Maguire was on the firing end of both goals for Lucan in the second period. Goals by Rick Ingram and Noel Skinner completed the Ex- eter counting in the third session and Murray Connolly hit the mark for Lucan. Gerald Weido and Steve Jen- nison assisted on Ingram's score and Brian Taylor and Rick Ingram helped on Skinner's marker. The two stars for the Hawks were Noel Skinner and Kim McKinnon. Atoms win one, lose one ZuricI, Atoms beat Hensall On Jan. 3 the Zurich Atoms were defeated by Blyth by a score of 9 to 1. Blyth scored three times in the first period, twice in the second and four times in the third as the' Zurich team scrambled to hold them back. Zurich's only goal was scored at the five minute mark of the third period as Dean Armstrong slipped one past the Blyth goalie assisted by Doug Schade. The game was played in Blyth. On Jan. 5 the Atoms managed to pull themselves together and defeated Hensall in a game played in Zurich by a score of 7 to 2. Zurich scored three times in the first ten minutes of play with Dean Armstrong picking up two goals, Rick Kuepfer getting a goal and an assist, Mike Bedard picking up two assists and an assist going to Doug Schade. Rick Kuepfer opened the scor- ing in the second period with an unassisted goal at the three minute mark. Then it was Hen- sall's turn to get on the score board as Darren Moir tucked one in behind Karmen Bedard in the Zurich net assisted by Philip Lovell and Danny Reid, - Hensall managed to score in the third period as Darren Moir found the target for his second goal of the game. This time Ian Munroe and John O'Brien took the assists. Zurich scored three times in the third period, goals going to Derek McKinnon, Dean Armstrong and Rick Kuepfer. Zurich assists went to Darcy Martin. Jeff Laporte and Doug Schade. Hat tricks went to Dean Armstrong and Rick Kuepfer on the Zurich team. Rick also pick- ed up an assist for a total of four points. ly rsu efea t CC Last Sunday the Zurich Flyers defeated CCAT • at the Zurich arena by a score of 7 to 2. The Flyers took the lead in the first five minutes of the game and never lost it. CCAT managed to hang on until into the second period keeping Zurich to two goals while scoring two themselves. Late in the second period the Flyers came to life and took over T the game scoring five con- secutive goals to win the game. Zurich goals were scored by Wayne Clarke, Derek O'Brien, 2; Glen Overholt, Randy McKinnon and Bob Farquhar, 2. Assists went to Randy McKinnon, Steve Bedour, Wayne Clarke, Pete Postell, Rick Schilbe and two to Glen Overholt. The star of the game for the Flyers was Wayne Clark. Colonials win two in a row The Shipka Colonials came out on top in both games played last week. On January 4, Shiph-a defeated Goderich E's -5 and January 7 they trounced CTAT 9- 0. The game against Goderich was a close fought battle with Goderich opening the scoring in the first period. It was close to the end of that period before Larry Laye connected on a puss from Da�"e Turner to tie the score at 1 • 1 In a high -scoring second period Goderieh look two fast goals to move into the lead. Undaunted, the Colonials fought back scoring two of their own. Both teams managed one further goal before the end of the second period. Goderich opened the scoring once again in the third period but that was to be their final goal as the Colonials held them off while scoring four goals of their own. Goal scorers in the second and third periods for Shipka were Paul Maguire, 3, Larry Laye, 2, John Becker and Brad Datars. Assists went to Mike Desjardine, Larry Laye, Dave Turner, John Becker, 2, Steve Kadlecik, 2, and Dan Stanlake. Larry Laye was the star chosen from the Colonials. In the game Shipka played against CCAT in Zurich, John. Hayter in goal for the Colonials took a shut -out as CCAT went down to defeat 9-0. Goal scorers for the Colonials were Pete Gill, 2, John Becker, Ed Grenier, Dan Dalton and Brad Datars, with a hat -trick for Larry Laye who was also chosen as the Colonials star of the game. The Colonials next games will be Thursday evening in Hensall against Hensall and Friday evening against Huron Park in Zurich. The third period goals for the Irish came from the sticks of Jerry Groenewegen, Randy Kraut and Cec Nickles. The Hawks had taken a 4-2 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. Ken Pinder opened the Exeter scoring on a pass from Fred Mommersteeg and Rick Ingram clicked on a three-way effort with Gerald Weido and Steve Jennison, Fred Mommersteeg chalked up his club's third goal with assists going to Ken Pinder and Phil Knight and the latter set up John Van Gerwen for the fourth Exeter counter. Scoring in the first period for Lucan were Jim Maguire and Brad Taylor. In the second period each team scored twice. Gerald Weido fired both Exeter goals with assists going to Rick Ingram. The se- cond score came with the Hawks playing short handed. Dave Smith and Ken Murray were the Lucan marksmen in the middle frame. Good Second Period The Hawks scored four times in the second period on the way to Friday's 8-2 win in Seaforth. Paul Brooks on an unassisted effort scored for the Hawks to account for the only goal in the first period. In the second period Brian Taylor fired two successful shots and Ken Pinder and Fred Mommersteeg scored in single fashion. Rick Ingram and Phil Knight each picked up two assists and Fred Mommersteeg, John Van Gerwen and Paul Brooks each grabbed one assist. In the third period, Brian Taylor was back with two more successful shots to up his game total to four. Rick Ingram assisted on both. Tom Hayter also registered on a pass from John Van Gerwen.
